i know many people have problems with system shock 1 under windows xp,but there are many different,so heres mine 😦 .
i got the cdshock.exe in my SS folder and the nolfb.exe.i tried editing the cdshock.bat file to :

nolfb.com
cdshock.exe

and

E:\SShock\nolfb.com
cdshock.exe

or
@echo off
E:\Sshock\nolfb.com cdshock.exe

and some other variatons, bur none has helped.so when i try to start the game through the cdshock.bat or cdshock.exe files.it tries to load the game but just when the game wants to start i get a black screen.i got the cd-version of system shock

here are my system specifications:
Athlon xp 2200+
os:windows xp
256 sdram @ 133mhz(i at least think they got 133mhz)
geforce 2 ti from msi 64 ddrram
K7S5A mainboard from elitegroup

newest graphics drivers etc. and i heard that could be my problem that i have too new graphics drivers,so that it won't work.i also followed this faq twice but it won't work too > http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69578

can someone help?

Sigh, I don't know how to force it to work in Windows XP BUT I have gotten it to work very well in DOSBox. I know this is like woo but that's the bottom line for me. I have dropped trying to force WindowsXP to run DOS Programs and just went for using DOSBox.

I'm in the same boat as this guy (CD version, Win XP). Forget Dosbox, that's the same as giving up in defeat. That's not why I come here. I would like to know about this "System Shock CD XP patch" as mentioned by a certain someone in this thread. I can't seem to find it anywhere, even after using the search function. Any help getting this going in XP would be appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. I've tried putting cdshock.exe to the HD and running nolfb, all the while using VDMSound. Nothing seems to work. I get two errors from the game that pop up in XP that complain about not being able to access COM1 and COM2 but then the intro and main menu load correctly thereafter. The specific error I get is when I try to start a new game. I get the following:
______________________________________________________
Our system has been shocked!! But remember to Salt The Fries
System Shock can no longer run due to a fatal error.
Error code 3007
Memory error
Not enough memory to make email cursor!

Common problem solutions:
* Incresase FILES in config.sys to 30 or more.
* Disable SMARTDRV write caching
* Use a minimal config.sys and autoexec.bat
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Using VDMSound I have the files at 40 so that can't be the issue. I also have EMS and XMS both at 16MB in VDMSound.

Your wish has been granted. Here is the CDshock XP executable.

http://home.graffiti.net/djkamilion:graffiti. … /cdshock_xp.rar

(and, for added benefit, a working cyb.cfg for harddrive use.)

This is configured for Soundblaster sound. Works For Me (TM)

For harddrive use, you'll need a CD version of system shock.

Make a directory (Default is C:\sshock\ for the installer)
Make a directory within that directory with a name like VIRTUASS
(8 char or less)

Copy the cd version into this folder. Here's my directory structure. ( Nore, I have removed all languages other than english to save space.)

Volume in drive C is System IBM40
Volume Serial Number is 686E-18F6

By the way, here are my specs.
And I'm not using VDMSound for it.

MSI K7N2G-ILSR nForce2 based motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2100+
512MB Samsung PC3200 @ 400Mhz
Onboard Geforce 4 MX 400 (200) (and now Radeon 9000 for doom3)
Dualboot Windows XP Service Pack 1 / Gentoo Linux

Works very well at 640x480 mode.

Cool, thanks. What exactly was done to the .exe to make it work? Also how do you get sound in XP without VDMSound? I can't enable legacy sound support without it crapping out on my system. Not sure if its an IRQ conflict or some other silliness.

My sys:
A7N8X Deluxe rev 1.04 (<-- nforce 2 of course 😉)
Athlon XP 3000+
1GB RAM
Geforce FX 5950
WinXP

P.S. Last question, how do you map keys on the keyboard? I never really tried the first time through. I remember 's' key is forward, 'x' is back, 'a' is look left and 'd' is look right, all of which is remarkable due to the age of this game (I didn't really start using a 'wasd' format until '99 and 2000). Thanks.

Thats cool. I think the sound bit has to do with your IRQ (your REAL IRQ, not that ACPI/WinXP fake one) and whether or not it conflicts with another device in your system. Also, if anybody can tell me how to get SS1 from complaining about COM ports 1 & 2 not being accessable I'd appreciate it. I'm not sure if it has to do with VDMSound or not but I guess it's possible. Thanks.
