So, I've recently reinstalled Windows 98 on my AMD K6 machine, installed Office 97, and when I tried to use the Equation Editor, I get this message:

"There is not enough memory or disk space to display or print the picture"

The funny thing is it worked without a problem before with only 64MB RAM and I had the application stored on a 128GB partition with only 3/4 of free space left. Frick, even my Toughbook CF-25 with only a 166mhz CPU, 64MB RAM, and an 80GB hard drive with a 16GB and 64GB partition with plenty of space left can do the Equation Editor flawlessly. Any suggestions? Would like to get this solved ASAP.

I had a similar memory-related error message when I wanted to open the MS organizational chart module 2.0 in Office 2000. Using Windows XP SP3. MS knowledge base described this Error, but no working solution.
So, Office was upgraded to edition 2003 - works fine there.

If all else fails (since you want this "ASAP") you can try contacting http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype/ for an old version of MathType that will work with Word 97. (The Equation Editor is just a stripped-down version of MathType, you see.)

What exactly are the specs of the machine you are currently trying to use? Sometimes having too much RAM or too much disk space can generate this sort of error message.

Here are my specs:

MB: ASUS P5A (updated with latest BIOS version)
CPU: AMD K6-2 400mhz
RAM: 64MB
Storage: 80GB IDE HDD and 250GB SATA HDD (2x 125GB partitions)

Again, the Equation Editor HAS worked before with NO issues at all and I still had the same specs (aside from the fixed storage; previously had two 128GB SATA HDDs, and the BIOS version; had 1007A and now using 1011.005 beta).

And does this error appear anytime you try to use the Equation Editor, or only when you're trying to edit a specific, pre-existing equation?

Have you tried emptying out your Temp directory (or directories) ?

Yes, anytime that I use it. Even tried to empty out the temp folder, nothing.

Huh, darn. Perhaps you did something different when you installed Word 97 this time? Did you install the service packs?

Reinstalled Windows 98 SE once again. I had SP2.1a installed previously and thought I would try the Equation Editor without it... Still nothing.

Well... I had KernelEx installed on that machine. Disabled it for MS Office and now the Equation Editor works properly.

Nope. Didn't apply updates, just installed Office (version is the Professional Edition BTW). All I know is that KernelEx was the culprit, which I had to disable for all MS Office programs. Everything works fine now.

Oh, I also use daily Office 97 Professional to manage my database (but on win 7 :p)
And I have found it's a lot more reliable once you install them. I would apply them if I were you
