Also I can't play crysis 3 even on my pair of super overclocked +45% gtx 470's on my big overclocked 4.4 ghz i7 gaming computer, it runs like 20-25 FPS has visible "hitching" and "jumps" from frame to frame and isn't even 30 FPS, and is just horrible, even on low settings.

Errr...I am guessing something is wrong. 25 FPS on low with an I7 and GTX470s doesn't seem normal even for Crysis 3

Crysis and Pentium D... it can't do more than 30fps according to this.

Seems a bit ... extreme. I don't mind dips down into 30 fps range and I certainly don't see any need to get over 60 FPS.
My monitor is only 60 FPS and I don't see the need for any more.

For fast multiplayer games 100+ fps is a must have (with vsync disabled of course) and drops below 60 are just not acceptable. Input Lag is much less annoying at high fps and games are running really smooth. Even some single player games are much better at high fps - for example NFSU2 @ 120fps, yay. 😁

ad. Crysis 3 - I would blame SLI in this case. I had no problem playing at 40+ fps medium-low with GTX 460 and i5 3330.

The GTX 470's were nvidia's first generation of DirectX-11 cards. So even with a big overclock and two of em, they struggle with most modern day DirectX-11 titles. The first cards in a new API are always the slowest, compare my 470's in DX-10 (very fast btw) vs the 8800 GTX's.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crysis-3- … ing,3451-4.html

Scroll down and look, even the 600 series cards have difficulty running the game at low settings in 1080p, only managing mid-40's at best with cards 2 generations newer. And they're even testing it on a Intel Core i7-3960X (Sandy Bridge-E) platform, much newer than mine, with a 6 core chip.

It's an FPS title. I won't even bother running FPS games unless they can be run at a constant 60 FPS everywhere. Some games I don't mind but first person shooters, you have to be able to turn around 180 degrees and see behind you with no delay in render time, or you die. I'm of the crowd that unless I can run things at medium with 60+ FPS constant everywhere (Depending on the title) I just assume not even bother playing it. It's just a really poor experience, and not even remotely "fun" to have to run things on minimum and have it look like garbage and dying because of low FPS.

That's not a pentium duo, its a single-core pentium with hyperthreading.

My builds!
The FireStarter 2.0 - The wooden K5
The Underdog - The budget K6
The Voodoo powerhouse - The power-hungry K7
The troll PC - The Socket 423 Pentium 4

Yeah, thats why I say PD would do 30fps at best, which is almost double of the P4 640.

Anyway - back on the topic
At the moment I'm testing Acer AL2021 - 20'' LCD 4:3 1600x1200 with both VGA and DVI input. The best part is - non-TN panel, so nice color gamut and viewing angle. 😀

GTA Vice City is awesome @ 60fps 1600x1200 with 6xAA. Powered by Radeon X800 XT PE AGP + Pentium 4 631 (Cedar Mill).

You can find performance difference in this table by yourself http://cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

I think what you meant to link is the "Main List" over here: http://cpubenchmark.net/mid_range_cpus.html

No, I post exactly that link, that I want.

So the newer tech.. the new mobile chips are actually a decent bit -faster- than some desktop quad cores, a lot of amd 4 core desktop chips are below it in there too.

I can easily compare my mid-range desktop cpu Core i5 3550 (6827 marks) with my top laptop Core i7 3520M (4538 marks).
Both launched in middle 2012, desktop cpu is cheaper, and besides that laptop use cpu from hi-end line, it's about 30% slower, than desktop.

Smartshader - isn't that just a fancy marketing name for pixel&vertex shader 2.0 support?
Perhaps you meant SmoothVision - antialiasing, anisotropic filtering and stuff like this. Yes, the screenshot above was taken with 6x MSAA, transparency antialiasing and 16xAF enabled. Unfortunately I had to turn off the TRAA - sometimes it causes frame drops, mainly if the scene is fillrate-intensive... lot of rain or smoke.

While the socket 771 Xeons truly are great they are not newer than Wolfdale/Penryn, they exist with the exact same core revisons, C0 and E0.

The great thing about them is the price and the extra multipliers in the case of X5460 and X5470, but mostly the price.

And you can socket mod a cheap 775 motherboard to take them.

Back to business. 15e from recycling. A bit pricey, but I don't see 286's around anymore. However, the best part was this elderly gentleman who noticed me bying this old piece of s**t and mentioned that he has 486's, Commodores and a bunch of ISA-cards stashed away somewhere and I asked him to give me a call if he ever wanted to get rid of them for a "fair price". 😈

I wouldn't consider €15 to be pricey for a 286, even one of an unknown history/condition! Nice find. I've just bought a bunch of parts for my Dell Inspiron 8000, hopefully I can fix that one up.

*Censored* ATi have killed the Radeon Xxxx OGL support in the Catalyst 7.12 and above. Also words "negative blending" and "table fog" are still unknown to ATi... And the last quirk - Radeon Xxxx is the 24-bit precision card.
Plus there are standard troubles with bad caps and leadless soldering.
Except this - X800/X850 (the AGP version especially) is epic.

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

These two 3dfx was $5 at a street market in Rio de Janeiro.

A "L shaped" Voodoo 4 AGP and a Monster Fusion Banshee PCI.

The voodoo 4 is perfect, the banshee has a bad cooler and two or three broken smds, probably not critical, because its working great, i will try to fix these smds later.

Amazing!
A Diamond Monster Fusion PCI and a Powercolor Evilking 4 L-shape really nice.
Does the serial no. on the powercolor card start with "3" ?

The Powercolor card is AGP2x (3.3v) only!! Even though it has an AGP4x connector!
(Please no one take that personal as I just wanted to give a warning for people who don't know)

The dog was included?

- or -

3.4GHz Emergency Edition. Which makes you wonder if dog man was overclocking it with that rather flimsy looking cooler installed, thank heavens those processors had thermal throttling.

Acquired a potentially interesting board today, an Asrock 775i65G. It's a socket 775 board with AGP 8x.

I have a ASRock 775V88 VIA PT880. Not a great performer to be honest and it had a bit of coil whine, solved by disabling cpu throttling on the bios.
It works ok nonetheless with a Pentium 560 3.6Ghz, although cpu-z shows that the cpu is only working at 3.5Ghz 😀
