Hi guys. My CT4500 is giving me headakes again. I'm trying to get the PC-Speaker output from the MB routed to the sound card, but it doesn't seem to be working. The mb speaker out works wine with a buzzer, but when I connect it to JP7 on the AWE64, nothing happens. I even tried rotating it in case I got +5v and GND reversed - no dice. I also tested the patch cable on my 486+SB16 and it works fine there.

Has anybody encountered this before? I'd like PC speaker out for old dos games like Prehistorik and Volfield.

Make sure it is enabled in the mixer - either Windows Volume Control or the MS-DOS based mixer from Creative depending on which OS you are using. Often it was turned off by default on the later cards I think, probably because it can add more noise to the other audio sources.

Yep, that's my guess too. My 95 machine regularly turns the speaker input off, too.

Also, reversing the pins shouldn't be a problem. It's an AC signal, voltage can go both ways.

... my creative driver pack (i used the AWE64 gold cd drivers) doesn't seem to have a mixer.exe or anything like that...

UPDATE: Got it running in windows - it was indeed muted. Is there a way to enable it at startup in dos via autoexec?

There should be a MIXERSET application for DOS, the alternative is to install the DOS SB16 drivers.

Generally, if MIXERSET exists, you should run it to set the levels you want and then run it with the /S parameter in AUTOEXEC.BAT as far as I remember. You probably have to have CTCM or DIAGNOSE executed before it to "initialize" the card.

I don't mind dragging out my Athlon box and taking a look at how mine was set up if you run into difficulty.

I have dos drivers installed and they work great (including midi and AWE support witch took me two hours to install under dos). I have no mixerset app. I'll check out my SB16 drivers.

Attached is the Creative driver package for MS-DOS mode of Windows 9x, which included MIXERSET. Make sure you study the readme file and run MIXERSET /? for full documentation.
