Hi,
just like to ask, considering these two os Win 98 (FE) and Win ME with the old AGP 1.0 (2X) subsystem, which video card actually would help the most accelerating desktop 2d usage?

"Best", ugh that word. Very arguably a Matrividiatidfx.
Matrox cards generally have that awesome2dshitty3d balance but can be expensive. It can also make your mouse cursor big, which also implies there's some nice 2d acceleration behind doing that for free

There shouldn't be much of a difference starting from Matrox G400/TNT/Rage 128/Voodoo3 on for plain 2D acceleration. Video acceleration, especially MPEG-2 (DVD) is another matter.
For XP I would suggest http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2d-windows-gdi,2547.html (only Voodoo4 in Win98 is included), but those are newish cards anyway, most are not available for AGP.
What CPUs are you thinking of? Any preference for GPU? What cards do you already have?
My vote: VOODOO3
Retro-Gamer 😀 ...on different machines
I'm using a K62-500 and I could go up to the K63-400 the mobo is mvp3 based so AGP2X and 384MB max. I'm using a Voodoo3 2000 cause it was the best time correct card I got. I was thinking to the Geforce2 MX,or the Viper II or the G400. I don't think it's the best think to use some modern card like Kyro2 or Radeon 8500 considering they were built for much better chipsets...
