Hello,

I'm running WinXP SP1. I installed VDMSound 2.0.4 with the update1, and also the LaunchPad 1.0.0.7.

I was playing XWINGCD without problems, then I exited the game, and right-clicked on the BWING.VLP file in order to edit its properties. But I couldn't because EXPLORER.EXE generated errors and restarted itself. When I tried again to open the properties page I got this error:

Then I clicked on "Retry" ("Reintentar" in Spanish) to debug the application, but EXPLORER.EXE generated errors again and restarted itself one more time.

This is my PC:
Celeron 633 MHz
256 MB SDRAM PC133
HD IBM 75GXP 30 GB
Asus CUSL2-C (intel 845ep chipset)
nVIDIA GeForce2 MX 64 MB
SB Live! Value
Hauppauge WinTV-Nexus

When you get assertion failures like this simply keep pressing "Ignore" (otherwise Explorer will die).

Now, it appears that you installed VDMSound 2.0.4, which is OK (installing LaunchPad without VDMSound is the main cause of this assertion failure). Open up Internet Explorer (not a new IE window, but a new IE from the desktop/Start menu) and type, in the address bar, the following:

%VDMSPath%

Does this take you to the VDMSound installation directory? Is there a "DOSDRV.EXE" file in there?

If you answered "yes" to both questions above then Windows XP's Explorer sucks and doesn't handle environment variable updates very well, and you'll need to log off/log back on (again, possibly all users if multiple users are running) or reboot.

If you answered "no" to one or both questions above then go to "Control Panel" and "Repair" VDMSound then try the test again. If the test fails again then reboot and do the test again.

Hi Vlad,

Yes, typing %VDMSPath% takes me to the VDMSound directory; and yes, there's a file called DOSDRV.EXE there.

And also yes, Explorer sucks, because rebooting solved the problem, exactly as you suggested.

I've tried to get the error message again, but it doesn't appear anymore.

Anyway, this reminds me of that joke: "Windows has detected that your mouse has moved. The system must now be restarted for the changes to take effect"
