I have the same dilemma. One thing is for sure it won't be a ball mouse. I think Mitsumi/Logitech used to make durable computer mouses. Anyway, I bought this one, but I haven't used it.

Looks like the Explorer 1. 3 is more common. The former looks bigger and more comfortable to be honest, but I can't tell until I have them both in my mouse collection.

I've been using a Explorer 2.0A for close to 15 years now. It's on my main machine. I won't post a picture because the color is mostly gone, it looks filthy even if it isn't, but it's still my favourite mouse. Certainly not for people with small hands though.

As a close second, I have a few standard Logitech optical mice laying around, can't go wrong with those.

I have two PS/2 Mice I absolutely love:

Logitech / Compaq M-S69
[/img]http://www.tcocd.de/Pictures/Peripheral/Logit … 9-2-1_large.jpg[/img]

And for my 90's computers I use a Compaq MUS4J
[/img]http://www.tcocd.de/Pictures/Peripheral/Compa … s4j-1_large.jpg[/img]

Both are ball mice, after switching to optical 6+ years ago I finally got sick of them. Optical mice just don't have the right weight or balance to them (or something, they are just kinda weird feeling) and they are WAY more sensitive than a ball mouse which makes them pretty useless for anything other than playing FPS games. Now that I've switched back to ball, I've had to clean it once or twice but the feeling is just perfect, optical mice have nothing on ball mice. 😁

IMO ball mice are only bad when the rollers get dirty. Otherwise most feel pretty good. If I had to choose though I'd definately stick with optical, but ball mice aren't as bad as people seem to think, just keep the rollers clean!

Logitech M-BJ58.
31G9GIqtTgL._AC_.jpg
They last practically forever. I've been using the same one since 2002.

Pros
Full-size mouse
Optical tracking sensor
Good action on the buttons and scroll wheel
Scroll wheel is indexed and clicks properly
PS/2 and USB connectivity
Ambidextrous
No drivers required

Cons
The nice blue and red variants are now almost completely unobtainable.

Note:
The Logitech iFeel mouse has the same shell as the M-BJ58, but is a USB-only mouse.

(Ball mice suck)
(Thumb buttons suck)
(You only need three buttons and a scroll wheel)
(The Logitech SBF96 is also a very good mouse)

Logitech M-BJ58. I completly agree. This model is also amazing and is 2nd in my list. Excelent ergonomics and also very durable, plus is optical.

I like microsoft mice and keyboards, especially late 90's intellimouse, they feel amazing and are mega robust. I just can't find this simplicity allied to build quality anymore.
intellimouse.jpg

Agree 100%

By far the best ball mouse I have ever used.

And I would still be using it, but I use my PC to output to my TV, and it got a little troublesome using the mouse some distance from the computer, so now I use the basic optical mouse. But I used that mouse model exclusively for 15 years.

If only there was an exact copy of this model with optical interface it would be the supreme mouse IMO 😄

I neglected to say what I use in my original post: Microsoft Intellimouse Pro "Serial and PS/2 compatible". Full hand-filler, ergonomic form [distinctly more flattened on the right hand side], grey rubber-coated bottom half. I think it's the one they had to stop making due to copyright infringement, not many pictures online these days. Though I see my Razer has similar shape.

This is an awesome thread. After being reminded I had an MX518 with a non working scroll wheel, I opened it up using an online guide, to find a load of cat hair and other gunge. Cleaned and reassembled, and now it's good as new. It'll be replacing the very basic Logitech infra red mouse I currently have connected to my KVM.

For years, my choice was a Logitech SBF-96. Reliable and optical with no BS. Recently, I've been using a Trackman Wheel, which can likely be converted to PS/2 fine.

I just noticed that Logitech has updated the discontinued G300 and is now calling it the "G300s".

logitech-gaming-mice-g300s.png

Aside from being a different color, it doesn't look any different. The specs also look the same except they don't mention WinXP compatibility.

Has anybody got one and tried it out yet? Can anybody confirm whether or not this new version will work with XP?

(Yep, we all know what it means when something gets an "S" or "SE" version... )

I like anything that is beige (to match my cases) and uses optical tech. (hate cleaning the ball underneath.) I have no use for any extra buttons other than the standard two buttons plus scroll wheel. And with those fancy "super pinpoint accurate" gaming mice I played with in PC stores, I haven't noticed much difference in performance.

I think PC mice don't live long enough to be sentimental. I'm constantly replacing old ball-bearing PS/2 mice that fail without warning. 😒 But my keyboards last forever.

I have never heard of a PS/2 mouse not working with a particular OS. They have had support since the late DOS age. But then again if the mouse came with software designed for a newer OS, you may have a problem.

The mouse will still work, but some advanced features, that depend on the software, may not be available. For example, DPI / button assignments may not be configurable.

What are some of the youngest mice that support PS/2?

probably the one that came with the first ps/2 IBMs 😁

170px-IBM_PS2_hiiri.jpg

EDIT: sorry for that, too much cafeine and not enough sugar on me brain right now.

Do you mean support, as in you can use an USB to PS/2 adapter, or just your plain optical mouse with ps/2 connector from factory?

I see some people like the MX310, but I prefered the MX300. Had a few of these back in the day and they were just amazing mice. They never stopped working either, I think I killed one with beer and the other was "borrowed" by a friend so I eventually had to get the MX518, which I considered a downgrade, as the MX300 were by then OOP.

Small, symetrical and perfectly balanced. I miss those mice.

I always liked the Microsoft mice most. I used (and still have) the serial version for a long time. It is the mouse I use whenever I want to do anything with my 386 machines:

51Q4F0xaVjL._SX425_.jpg

I also have a Intellimouse Optical 1.0a, which connected to my main rig and active retro PCs thru KVM switch. I like the general shape and size of it much, but the side buttons (forward, backward) are something I never get used to and I generally push them by mistake at the awkwarest of the moments. I really would have preferred a simpler 3-button version:

And finally my most favorite mouse ever, Microsoft Sidewinder X3. I get used to it like one of my extremities. Its connected directly to my main rig, I love it:
