I am working on a project that has probably already been done to determine what the ultimate Windows 98 gaming box is. I know there is really no such thing as ultimate but at least a guideline. I am currently looking at versions and dates of API's, OS's, and hardware to get a good idea of what it will look like. Ultimate is probably the wrong word to describe this but I had to call it something and it sounded better than calling it the Mediocre Windows 98 Gaming Box.
This is how I thought about it, obviously there is more than one way to do it.
My requirements are straight forward.
1. Do not worry about DOS legacy support
2. Do not worry about games that can be properly handled in XP without tricks/hacks
3. Be able to handle all (most?) Windows games from 1995 through the point where XP can handle the rest
4. Have enough speed to play them at max settings and high resolutions
I will post my data on API's, OS's, versions and dates when I get it done. I will definitely need some help making sure it is correct and using that information to make decisions.
I have picked the following hardware so far.
Intel 865 chipset
Newest Intel chipset with Windows 98 support, AGP, Socket 478 and LGA 775
Can still be bought new (inexpensively) with LGA 775
I am not interested in Prescott Pentium 4's. More heat and longer pipeline.
Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 3.4-GHz CPU for Socket 478
Single core, 3.4-GHz, 512k cache, 89-Watt TDP
Intel Celeron 450 for LGA 775 (dirt cheap on eBay)
Single core, 2.2-GHz, 512k cache, Core based, 35-Watt TDP
Here is the new board I am looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … N82E16813157338
I would combine that with a Celeron 450 and 512MB of DDR400 for my base system.
It looks like the Celeron 450 is about 50% faster than the Pentium 4 Northwood 3.4-GHz, runs cooler, cheaper and new boards are available. Does that sound about right? I know other options are available but it seems to me that anything dual-core would be a waste.

Micron 384MB SDRAM (3x128)
Compaq Voodoo3 3500 TV Graphics Card
