Ok, somehow I did this once before, but I can't remmember how I did it. How do I get it to use the config.sys and autoexec.bat I have specified to use in the .pif file?

Hi there,

is it really necessary to use autoexec.bat / config.sys ?...
Anyway, when you launch a game for the 1st time, a file is created in
the game directory with VLP extension. (ie, "dune.vlp").
Right click on that file,
select properties,
go to VDMSound tab,
select advanced,
select DOS Environment.
There you can make the changes/additions.

NB, XP's own NTVDM engine can use autoexec.nt and config.nt located
in your "XP dir/system32" directory. You only get SB 2.0 emulation with XP SERVICE PACK 1. With SERVICE PACK 2, it is extended to SB16 and AWE 32 -> for some games, you don't need emulation any more. I've tested
like 20, results are satisfactory but not convincing. VDMSound and DosBox
are way ahead.

I've tried doing that in the dos enviroment, but when placing the 'EMM=ram' line within the config.sys area, it says that no EMS exists.

Also, I know about xp's sound emulation, but it's still rather....quite pathetic right now. too jittery imo 😉

I think the like actually should go "DEVICE = EMM386.EXE RAM", but I'm not sure that would work any more.

NTVDM does not provide EMS on some motherboards with a lot of on-board devices. Try disabling some of the on-board stuff in the BIOS, and see it NTVDM can get EMS to work.
