I put this together rather quickly to test the Slot 1 mobo and CPU I got back in February; so far everything is humming along quite nicely 😊
ASUS P3B-F V1.04 Slot 1 motherboard (Intel 440BX)
Pentium III 600MHz Katmai CPU
512mb PC-133 SDRAM
Visiontek GeForce 2 GTS 32mb AGP
3dfx Voodoo 2 1000 12mb SLI
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz PCI sound card + Cancun FX MIDI DB
Belkin F5U219 3-Port USB2 PCI card
Seagate 40gb Barracuda ATA IV & Western Digital 80gb WD800JB hard drives
Sony 16x DVD-ROM
Generic 3.5" floppy drive
Enermax CS-A1QX-02 ATX case
Enermax 300Watt ATX PSU
Some of the parts come from The Understudy project that I had to cancel for the time being. Here are pics of the rest:
The ASUS Slot 1 board and P3 CPU.
When I saw this Visiontek GF2 on eBay I knew I had to have it! It's a dead ringer for the one I lost back in 2005; now my old GF2 retail kit is complete once again ^^.
Voodoo 2 cards do look good in pairs 😁 . The Enermax PSU was fully recapped recently by a neighbor's acquaintance; he doesn't recap motherboards though (and no pics of the inside, sorry).
And the final assembly. Please notice the complete lack of cable management 😜
I restored a pristine install of Windows 98 SE that I had backed up with Norton Ghost 2003 previously; no major problems or issues yet. Haven't done any benchmarks however, those will come later (probably). And believe it or not, this is only the second Slot 1 motherboard I've ever owned (I had a Gigabyte GA-6BXC back in 2000) and my first ever Slot 1 CPU; I must have spent close to 2 weeks just looking at both over and over to familiarize myself with the layout 😅
(The personal stuff that was here is now gone courtesy of yours truly; the real life nightmare is finally over. Updates to this build will be posted here instead. Enjoy 😀 )
UPDATE 1: Changes done on 6/15
- Turtle Beach Santa Cruz replaced with Turtle Beach Montego A3DXstream (Aureal Vortex AU8820)
- Replaced 128mb x2 + 256mb PC133 SDRAM with 256mb x2 PC133 SDRAM (looks neater ^^)
- Reinstalled Windows 98 SE due to unrecoverable crash 😅
- Installed Gravis Gamepad Pro, added benchmarks for Unreal (Glide mode)
UPDATE 2: Changes done on 1/16
- Replaced Pentium III 600MHz Katmai (Slot 1) with Pentium III 1000E Coppermine (Socket 370, 100MHz FSB) + generic Slocket + StarTech CPU Cooler
- Asus P3B-F BIOS updated from 1006 to 1008 beta 4 (can identify Coppermine processors)
- Added a ton of benchmarks (sorry about that 😅 )
FINAL UPDATE:
- The project was fully redone and finalized. Read my latest post in this topic for the link.
Ooohh, the pain......
