The 2002 versions should be suitable I think. This has worked for me with Matrox cards for example. They also have V-Sync enabled by default.

I had an FX 5600 XT that was actually slower than a vanilla FX 5200 (not the 64bit one). It was severely underclocked, so you could raise its core clock quite a bit.

No, it's a different core. FX5600 is NV31. FX5200 and 5500 are NV34.

Well... I gave up, looking for a FX5200 PCI here in denmark. Those avaliable, are sold at a minimum of 30 US Dollars.
And they are the low tech/performer editions. And they are used and looks beat up. Simply too much to pay.

I went ahead and thought about other solutions, as the Compaq with a TNT delivers over 6000 in 3D-Mark99.
And behold... I found an Intel D815EEA2 motherboard at a low price of 16 US Dollars (110 dkr) including shipping.
If I went to pick it up my self, I would have walked away with it at a price of 10.21 US Dollars. What a steal.

So no more need for sorcing a high performance PCI-Card.

Thanks again, Phil. I simply had to uncheck a box about "disable support for driver options", and Powerstrip turned off OpenGL vsync for the 56.64 drivers.

I've been looking into a replacement for my Pentium pro system, at the time when I bought my 6200 pci I thought I'd go for the latest pci card that supported windows 98, big mistake!

ALL PCI 6200s are 64 bit cards, interestingly enough, most FX5200s aren't gimped with a 64 bit bus!

The standard clocks for the PCI FX series are roughly this.

CPU Memory
FX5200 250 400
FX5500 275 400
Quadro 275 490
Inno3d 325 500
IF I can ever find a pci Inno3d FX5600 256meg they'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands, Its clocked at 325 CPU & 500 Memory, IMO that's the best era card for a Pentium 3 system running windows 98SE, unfortunately it appears this card was rare even 10 years ago so it might be next to impossible to source.

How about the Quadro? It works exactly the same as the cards no funny driver issues just use the detonators?

EDIT: I forgot about the ATI 9100! Its the same as a Radeon 8500LE with 64meg of memory 250 CPU & 500 Memory, it has 8 texture units compared to 4 in the FX series, that should be the fastest era card for windows 98 but the Nvidia might be a better combo card for dos/windows, don't know.

Unfortunately that's another rare card.

I've got a 9200SE. Still not quite sure where it sits in performance wise compared to V3 or V5. Also not sure what the "best" driver is.

There are also 7500 PCI cards. Again I don't know how it compares.

The 9100 is apparently identical to a radeon 8500LE, which is slightly slower clocked 8500(250/250 in the LE 275/275 in the 8500).

With later drivers the original 8500 was comparable to an original Geforce 3 or ti500 cant remember, short answer the 9100 should absolutely smash the Voodoo 5(except for opengl probably).

the 9200SE is rebranded 9000 with 4x1 pixel pipelines compared to 4x2 in the 8500le, also the 8500le has 2 pixel shaders compared to the 1 in the 9000.

THE other consideration if you ever had the choice would be to choose a 64meg 9100 as it should have faster memory.

i flashed a MAC Radeon 7000 PCI to PC for my K6-2 Machine, because i couldnt find any PCI Version with a fast Memory Bus..

I started this conversation by asking for the best, not the fastest number chrunching card.

By the best, I am thinking of the fastest out of those cards that are 98 to 99% compatible.
That is the best card in my book. Not just the fastest of them all.
I know it is like a thing, were you need to sacrifice speed in order for compatibillity.

My Radeon 9250 arrived with a busted fan and/or fan power. The card still worked. Preliminary testing showed that it may be faster than the 128-bit FX5500. I may just point a small fan at it while I run 3DMark01.

As far as I remember. GF-6200 does not have FOG table, and many older games like that.
As far as NFS-2K (no Win98 pc without, thank's), it is not possible for me to get it going on my 6200 AGP at all.
Geforce3/4 is the top Nvidia for me. Radeon-9600-AGP can run all games I want.

This is why the FX5600 PCI is near the top of my must have list. It's the fastest PCI card that doesn't seriously break backward compatibility with older games and is actually faster than a GeForce 6200.

is there a windows 3.11 driver for radeon 7500?
