Ok guys I really need some help here, my Sound Blaster 16 has suddenly stopped working after I plugged a joystick into it and now win98 insists it's an Adlib opl2. 😢 How can I fix this? I tried reinstalling it and I got the blue screen of death. 😒

Sounds like something died / shorted when you plugged the joystick in. Very odd though.

I tried another SB16 I had laying around and it installed ok but now Windows 98 won't start. 😒 It just stops and displays the message "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer"

One of those days...

Might have to re-install Windows 98 SE. But before you do that you can try booting into safe mode, delete the Sound Blaster entries in device manager and see if that fixes it.

Yeah I disabled the soundcard in safe mode and it started fine. Does this just sound like a windows problem? I should check the cards in another computer.

Did you plug the Joystick in the card while the system was on? Hot plugging stuff that wasn't designed to do so can indeed have nasty effects.

I've never shut down the PC to connect the joystick, but I might change that hearing about King_Corduroy's misfortune.

No it was off and then I plugged it in! I've NEVER had this problem before. 😒 This was a Quickshot PC joystick btw, I just picked it up from goodwill and I was testing it with a Gameport to USB adapter but that stupid thing never works right so I thought I would see if it was the joystick or the adapter by calibrating it on a vintage machine. 😒
