So the wine-staging fork of wine is merging back into the wine project. It sounds like they may keep them as separate baselines, but that wine-staging will basically become an official development/testing/unstable branch with a process (and desire) for migrating patches from wine-staging to wine.

This is being accompanied by a sea change in attitude among wine project leadership. Bug tracker and AppDB reports written against wine-staging are now being accepted on WineHQ.org (I can confirm this first-hand, as they reversed a rejection of an AppDB report that I submitted yesterday). The red-headed stepchild known as winepulse may actually be on a path towards migration from wine-staging to wine!

+winehq.org on Google+ pointed me here for more info: https://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2 … ber/109392.html

When I switched to OS X and wanted to get a lot of Windows stuff working I stumbled over a couple of OS X-only bugs and reported them. Then needed to defend against "you are probably using a third party built and thus most likely not a valid bug" (I used a direct source build) or "works here on linux x and linux y, must be a user error". Defending against one usually lead to hearing that other thing.
Then after spending time to regression test and finding the breaking commit, I was muted only to see the fix many months later in exactly the same place as the breaking bug.
No, dealing with Wine was annoying and only lead me to use it as little as possible...
Maybe that changes now, let's see, I'm a bit doubtful since it's still the same devs...

Yeah, that's pretty lame.

Sounds like they're going to do a better job of producing binaries, so you may not need to build it yourself.
