The computer is an Alienware M17x which originally came with Vista and the free windows 7 upgrade option and is now (for a long time) running windows 7 service pack1. It has an intel core duo T9600 @2.80GHz,64 bits, 4GB RAM,Nvidia GeForce 9400m G display adapter and IDT High definition audio CODEC. The region language setting is US.
The problem is dosbox 0.74 does not detect keyboard input. I have tried keyboardlayout=us, loads correctly in the dosbox status window but does not work. Neither does keyb.exe us which also appears to load correctly. When running fullscreen the only key available, thankfully, is the one with the windows logo, calling the start menu. Otherwise I would not be able to get out of the non responsive dosbox as alt+enter is not recognized.
Help Please.

Ok I fixed it. After trying many many things like disabling firewalls, display options, uninstalling, re installing dosbox, etc.,etc., I went to the device manager and seeing there were no enable\disable options under keyboards, I took some courage and uninstalled everything in there. The PC asked for a reboot, new hardware found, wait for it, and voila!, It works!.

nope! it's a recurring problem. Here is what's left under "keyboards" at the device manager:
HId keyboard device
Microsoft eHome MCIR Keyboard
Microsoft eHome Remote control Keyboad Keys
Standard PS/2 Keyboard
Uninstalalling all of them no longer works.
Help please.

Hey thank you! . The "Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver" does not have a disable option in my PC. There are two suspects under the Human Interface Devices however:
Bluetooth remote Control
ITECIR Infrared Receiver
These can be disabled and when I do the keyboard does work.
