Hi,

I just installed dosbox 0.74 on my Vista 64 PC, and have started playing Legend Entertainment's "Spellcasting 101". The game is functioning well except for one issue: the text box under the picture area of the emulator either describes things in the room I'm in or conversation text as required, but when the "description" or "conversation" is long-winded, and I click on "more" to advance the text, it will scroll so fast as to not be able to read the entire text. And I don't see any way to slow it down or back it (the text) up so it can all be read. Is there any way around this problem? I have attached a screenshot of the emulator... Thanks!

The attachment SC101.jpg is no longer available

What cycle speed are you using?

If I remember correctly, the text should pause, waiting for a keystroke when scrolling. But I could be wrong, it's been a long time.

I would try a cycle speed of 4000 and see how that works out.

It's set currently at 3000 cycles. It needs to be faster (4000) you think? I'll have to go read up on how to increase it, and then check it again. I'll re-post if that doesn't help. Thanks!

More cycles is probably not going to make the text scroll slower...

In any case, the purpose of the "- MORE -" prompts is to pause the scrolling text, so just don't press a key or mouse button until you're done reading.

Yeah, I realize that. It's just that on some occasions when pressing "MORE" after I'm done reading whatever is in the pane, if there's too much text to fit in the pane again it doesn't stop with another "MORE" prompt. It just keeps right on going to the end of whatever is in that text dump. And it scrolls fast, so I might miss several lines of text, or even a whole paragraph.

I don't think this is a DOSBox issue so much as an emulator or OS glitch, but having played this over 20 years ago on a Windows 95 or XP machine (whichever it was), I don't recall it doing this. Of course, that was a LOT of brain cells ago...

Hmm, what are you doing to proceed from MORE prompts? Try pressing the spacebar. Pressing extended keys (such as cursor keys) can trick the game into thinking two keys were pressed in a row.

That worked! I was pressing the down arrow. Thanks!
