VDMSound under WinXP with the OldGame MAX ?

I try to use VDMSound with the Old Dos Games MAX
wich is working under winxp without sound.
I tried to set the sound settings up with:
start setup.exe with vdmsound and choose soundblaster 16 with the standart VDMSettings, the result is that i have sound but with very bad quality.
My question is, does anybody use VDMSound with MAX under WinXP and has acceptable sound ?
If so, how should i set up the settings to have good sound ?

I use Windows 2000 and the game doesn't even start unless I disable sound.

if you run setup with vdmsound and choose SB16 with the VDM Default settings and then start the game even with vdmsound the it should start with sound but very instable (if the sound change to fast (louder or faster) it hangs up (the sound hangs up)) just with lowering the cpu usage in the VDMSound settings it is a little bit more stable but not enough to play with good quality
