I hope this is in the correct sub-forum but if not, please move it accordingly.

I've tried to play a few different Legend Entertainment interactive fiction (text adventure) titles using the streaming DOSBox emulator online at archive, org, but they aren't working. Simply put, they don't stream. They "load" like they're going to run, but then act like I have a really taxed system, which I don't believe I do. Here's an example of one of the games that won't stream (there are many that I've tried): https://archive.org/details/msdos_Gateway_1992

I understand the online emulator is using the javascript engine in my browser to stream the game. I'm using the latest Firefox which I also understand has one of the better embedded javascipt engines. My system is running Vista 64 on a 2.66GHz quad core processor with 6GB RAM and an nVidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti video card with 4GB memory. I'm on cable with download speeds of between 50 and 90 Mbps depending on which site I use for the test. I checked my javascript default settings via my about:config page, and the network.protocol-handler.external.javascript pref is set to false as it should be. My ad-block app is disabled for archive.org.

Any suggestions for what I can try going forward?

Thanks!

Streaming a game... I guess that's the terminology being used now instead of "thin client".

It sounds like cycles need to be increased, whether it be done by the host or the client. However, only official versions of DOSBox are supported here, so you'll have to ask archive.org for help.

Sorry ripsaw8080...I wouldn't know a "thin client" from a fat one. I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I certainly don't have nearly the expertise of many of the contributors on this forum. The only reason I posed this question here is because I thought the DOSBox emulator used on archive.org was an official version. They talk about requiring "the DOSBOX project to improve emulation going forward" in their FAQ's, which I probably misunderstood as being connected with dosbox.com.

You mentioned possibly increasing cycles....what are you referring to (he said, showing his ignorance) and how is it done?

By the way, the "thin client" works fine on my wife's laptop which has nearly the same specs (not quite as "powerful") as my PC, except it uses Windows 10 now. I guess I could always play it there, if she'll part with it! ;>)

I don't think archive.org is streaming games or using a thin client approach -- they're using a Java port of DOSBox and bundling it with games (somewhat controversially, I might add, with respect to copyright), and as such the emulation is running locally in your browser.

It sounds like the problem you're having is not about cycles, given what you say about different results on different systems, but as I said before the Java port of DOSBox used by archive.org is not official and you'll have to ask them for support.
