Hey fellas,

as some of you may know i'm planning an XT build and IMO nothing is more fun than assembling these old systems.

I'm on the look for a case since i now have XT-IDE built, a 1.2MB 5.25 TEAC and i have a white (grey) Gotek on the way. I want a desktop case and preferably full height so that i could use all slots. Something like badmojo's 486 case (hijacking your picture i'm sorry):

IMG_3699_zps3c6d4322.jpg

A problem is i lack space, and my desk is an IKEA borgjso 5f6cf5c39467b19d55b496a2a56840ed.jpg which saves me space around the house by eing a corner desk. My apartment is rather small and space in the UK is expensive.

So i'm really looking for the most compact desktop AT case ever but at this point i'm even considering getting a baby AT tower and just lay it on its side which is kinda crappy. These baby AT cases are tiny though and would save me space. XT cases are too wide and have a rocker PSU switch that i wouldn't be able to use since i'm using a Seasonic SS-300FS ATX PSU. It's a pretty tiny PSUso i can fit it in a small case.

I'm asking anyone around here to post pictures of their desktop AT cases and if possible its dimensions. For a desktop case i need something not bigger than 40cm wide, and 38cm deep. Height is really not a problem for horizontal cases as i rather have full height than using a case that needs a riser card.

The perfect dimensions would be 35cm x 35cm, but i don't think there's such a small AT desktop case. So yeah i'm also looking on the dimensions of a minitower baby AT which i guess could be closer to what need. 😢

My XT build is currently on the case I bought a 486 system with. You can see it in this post. It is 40cm wide and 39cm deep. It looked very out of place housing a late PCI 486 because it has two IDE LEDs, as that motherboard has a single LED header that signals the activity of both IDE channels. It also looks way too modern for a XT, but it works. Here are some more pics:

I find it hard to believe you'll find anything much shallower unless you find a case very cleverly designed. There is almost no space between the 5.25" drive bays and the PSU in this case.

My Seasonic PSU is 13.9cm deep and the TEAC 5.25 floppy drive is 20.5cm long so there's still a few cm left for cabling.

The dimensions of your case would be perfect for me and it seems that i could even live well with 40 x 40cm. Kixs has a case at amibay with 40 x 40cm but unfortunately is not a full height case and it doesn't bear a power button. I have to keep on looking, because i really lack space. I could then put my monitor on top of the case and my mixer as well.

Pretty cool case alexanrs. I don't really care if a case isn't period correct and the 2nd LED could be cool for something else.

Length or depth (I don't know what is the correct word to describe it) around 41cm is kind of a standard. At least my other mini tower cases are all 41cm long.

I think I also have a case like badmojo's one.

The greatest advantage of a mini tower is that their height is really small. But they can be deep.

What I meant is that, since the PSU in this case is pretty standard-sized for its time, so I find it hard to believe its gonna be easy finding cases shallower than that. And yeah, I like this case! With the old Deskpro that used to be in its place I had a hard time leaving a second system plugged in and still have enough space for my hands/arms, now it is perfect!

By the way, it might be a long shot but did you look into old-style ATX desktop cases? The ones where the PSU blow air on the processor? I have two towers like that and they are very short (35cm tall), but somewhat deeper (45cm). Presumably a desktop from that time could also fit your desk.

Nah... Even though i don't care if the case isn't XT era i really don't want to go ATX looks.

I've answered. The bottom case seems to be really interesting, and i think i could live with it setting it horizontally. I would rather have a real desktop case but they seem hard to find and at this point i don't want to sacrifice ISA slots by using half height cases.

alexanrs case is indeed beautiful and qould be perfect for my needs.

I found this on eBay while browsing for something else:

Slightly too deep, expensive shipping, and will take some love before it looks good (the top lid needs sanding and a paint job), but hey, here you go.

These are almost all my AT cases. There is also the one like badmojo's in the right of the second row.

carlostex, can you take detailed photo of these plastic standoffs in your case and measure its height? I have similar case and can't find any fitting standoffs 😕

Sorry but no cases in this thread belong to me.
