I have installed Dosbox on a win8.1 machine which works nicely but I am used to a white background with black text. I do not use games but have a lot of files in DOS and will continue to do so. Therefore I need the colours "inverted" which I used to do on my original DOS machine. Help!

ANSI codes will work for the shell and console text in general, but there are limitations.

Maybe use the CHGCOLOR program here: How to tweak CGA / EGA game palettes easily :)
Running it in DOSBox with with "chgcolor 0:7 7:0" will reverse the normal text colors, or "chgcolor 0:255 7:0" if you want an intense white background.
