I gave up on my XP machine running Tie Fighter. I tried all the fixes listed here (VDMSound, DOSbox, noflb etc., even followed instructions for custom batch file - no avail: the resolution was still sooo low, it was almost unusable). So I got an old Compaq Deskpro 4000. Specs as I can determine them: EcoLost 15" monitor (Eco-nomical, with Lost drivers - using Win98 default drivers)
Sound: Diamond DT-688 PCI card with disk
gfx: Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI
64mb RAM
40 GB hard disk
According to dxdiag - everything is running ok, and the Hardware profiles list has everything installed and running no problem. I have sound, and can play CD's. Updates for this machine are awkward as it is standalone.
Running TieFighter, the soundcard is "detected" but no sound. When I do get sound ("ok, ok, ok", all the way through regardless) it is just a lot of loud "beeeeeeee!" which I figure is wrong. Sure sounds wrong. The readme says that there are known issues with Diamond graphics, but I don't run that. VDMSound doesn't work with 98 (obviously) so that fix is unavailable. If I run the game from the TieCD "boot disk", the cdrom drive is unavailable... Ok, all I want to do is play this darn old game - Any suggestions? (Easy, I am new compared to most of you, and I have to learn somehow 😉).
Thanks!
