You can teach a man to fish and feed him for life, but if he can't handle sushi you must also teach him to cook.
yeah, better, why waste our time with ppl like you...

Who's wasting whose time?
The OP said flat out he does NOT want an SSD in the 3rd post - yet that's ALL some of you are talking about.

I've seen this scenario many times in many places.
Someone says they aren't interested in SSD (and why) and all the SSD fan-boys come crawling out of the wood work to tell how great they are.
Guess what. Some people have other needs and just don't give a shit about SSD.
I see no difference in that behavior and the behavior of those that want to tell everyone all about their God after being told no one wants to hear it.

Quick follow up - I got myself a 7200RPM 1GB HGST Travelstar 7K1000. Lets see how that goes.
Did you decide anything about the CPU?

Not yet. Probably gonna get the cheapest i5 I can find, as I'm not sure I'd really feel the difference between a 520m and 560m most if the time. But I'll set up the HDD first.

Supposed to be a really solid, reliable drive.
All hail the Great Capacitor Brand Finder

Yeah, I heard nothing but good things about HGST/Hitachi as far as reliability goes... And I couldn't find a WD Black HDD at a decent price.
Follow up: The HDD arrived, I plugged it in, along with the old one, into my secondary PC and copied the partitions with EASEUS Partition Master (and resized them) and put the HGST driver in the laptop. It booted like nothing ever happened and it's running great.
I haven't used the laptop for that long, but it does feel a lot snappier than with the old WD Blue.
~ COOL! ~
The reviews on those look pretty good and they aren't as expensive as I thought.
Might have to try one myself.

Another quick follow up: I bought the i5 520m, it arrived and I installed it. Working great. Weird thing - I had to uninstall the processor in the Device Manager and let Windows detect it again, because the task manager was still listing the processor as the old Pentium Dual Core P6100. The laptop is fine now but I'll keep watch for cheap used 4GB memory sticks anyway to bump it to 6 or 8GB if I find it for cheap... shouldn't be hard, as I've seen plenty of sticks for under US$15 here in Brazil.

I imagined how the CPU pops out of the system with an instant BSoD after you press "Uninstall" in the device manager 🤣 🤣 🤣
How's the cooling? Has it become noticeably hotter?
I am yet to really stress the CPU to test (could not do it yesterday), but I did change the thermal compound to my trusty Arctic Cooling MX-4 so hopefully it will be fine. Will try measuring temps under load later.
15 minute Prime95 run - maximum temps around 87°C for one core, 85°C for the other, and in a room with the AC set to 23°C.
For a laptop, this is probably okay, so I'm not too worried about it... specially because I really doubt I'll ever stress the CPU as much as a stress test while using it.

Intel gives the max die temperature at 105°C. You are perfectly fine.
CONGRATS!
