Can the LIne-In audio input found in many Sound cards like the Sound Blaster 2.0, Sound Blaster Pro2 CT1600, SB16 among others be activated without the need of the drivers? Maybe via jumpers?
Thanks for any replies!

You need to set it in the mixer. No way around that.

Yea and if you don't like that or want a different behaviour, I recommend investing into an external mixer.

The Sound Blaster 2.0 has no software-accessible mixer, so whenever you record, you are taking a combined input from the mic and line-in with no drivers required.

For later cards like the SBPro, you can just use MIXERSET.EXE to set the inputs and levels you want, then save them to a file. You can then run Mixerset at boot time to load that config file and set the levels to what you prefer - it doesn't use up any memory.

Make sure you use the correct version of Mixerset for your card. Like Diagnose.exe, it seems that using the wrong version can give you unpredictable results. Using the SB16 version with my SBPro2 meant it couldn't set the master volume properly.

Wow that's a great idea!.Will that work let's say for example, with DOS and Windows 3.1 running along side?

Shouldn't matter - as soon as the mixer controls are set, they remain unchanged until they are set again.

It's possible the Windows driver will change them when it loads, but if not, then they will remain as whatever they were last (e.g. set by Mixerset in autoexec.bat). If they *do* get changed, just put an icon in your Startup folder that runs Mixerset again to put them back 😀
