Yes, naturally it needs to be compatible with the original.
But in actual practice, I have no idea whether there was much variety between the models used on motherboards or not.

If the internal battery of the dallas RTC is dead, you can cut into the chip and add an external coin battery to it. I've done it to three dallas RTCs now, works great, and when the external battery dies you just add another coin battery.

There are a few different models in use from my experience. The differences are probably in data size since most EISA systems seem to use Dallas chips to store CMOS and EISA configurations.
