The majority of my hardware collection are dual-socket and workstation/enterprise grade boards. It was time for my desktop to take a similar turn.
This is my first modern Intel 2P build, based on a Lenovo Thinkstation D30 motherboard. The original plan was to eventually go dual E5-2687W or E5-2690 v2, but this board may not support those. There is a revision "2.0" board which I believe does support the Ivy Bridge EPs, but by the time prices drop on those I could just upgrade to 2011-v3 instead.

This required some custom standoffs to get mounted, not sure if the holes are SSI EEB or a combination of that and EATX, but I required 4 new standoffs and had to fill in a cable management hole to fully support the board.
I realize the cooling is overkill, but I already had the first H105 left over from my previous build, decided to get a matching H105 for the second proc. Of course the 800D was never meant for a setup like this so I had to get creative in mounting this beast. Love how this thing idles at like 35-40 on each proc and doesn't get hotter than 50C under load on either.
Still gotta clean up the fan wiring, replace my shitty old fan controller, get some extensions for the PSU cables, the fans, a few other things.

Some pics of the second H105 setup. Cut some aluminum angle to fit, pop riveted the brackets together and drilled the required holes; rock solid. Had to get a second intake in place to feed this rad, so I popped in some 5.25" bay covers from my old Cooler Master HAF932. The foam is in there to reduce flow noise, was pretty loud without the foam but it's not so bad now. Still need to get a filter in there.

For some reason the Cinebench score doesn't seem as high as it should be, might be due the slightly low clocked memory?


Balls out the machine pulls about 630W at the wall under full load, according to my UPS. Not sure how close to accurate it is. That is minus the 50W or so my monitors are pulling.
The machine idles at about 200W. Not too bad I suppose. No clue what my i7-920 build pulled, but I'm guessing it was definitely higher at idle than this setup as I was running a GTX 770 Classified on that build and my proc was overclocked to 3.66Ghz.
