Any "Halt and Catch Fire" fans here?
Let me present a What If scenario. What if Halt and Catch Fire was really telling the story about a Cardiff company that released the Cardiff Giant with the exact specs we have seen in the series? Let me refresh your memory:
8086 CPU at 8MHz
640Kb memory
Real Time Clock
10MB Hard Drive
5.25 floppy drive (probably 360k)
640 x 200 screen LCD res
Serial and Parallel ports
Enhanced DOS 2.0 (difficult to say what would the improvements being so maybe equivalent to DOS 3.0 and 1.2MB floppy support)
I think the prop makers in the show were lazy to put an RGB and composite outs on the back of the computer prop i think its safe to at least assume the Cardiff Portable would be able to connect to external monitors and TV. It was half the weight of the Compaq Portable and the IBM 5155. Joe MacMillan claimed it would be half the price of what was on the market and with 640kb of memory it would have been a no brainer for anyone who would have wanted a portable.
I think Cameron's OS was a bit unnecessary. It wouldn't even compare to Mac OS GUI and it would have required extraneous memory besides being a CPU hog slowing the machine down (as claimed in the series by Gordon). It could eventually bring compatibility problems with MS-DOS applications, so IMHO the correct thing to do was to ship the machine with DOS and maybe offer Cameron's OS as an expansion.
Did you follow the show? What are your thoughts?
