Err, we need some redefinition of terms here.

DIGITAL: digital CD (two-pin) connector.
ANALOGUE: analogue CD (eight?-pin) connector.
(E)IDE: the long, bulky ribbon cable that prevents air from flowing freely, but keeps data from colliding and needing to be retransmitted. (It's a trade-off. Flat, you have a lower system temperature, so you can overclock more, but you have more data collisions. Ribbon, you have a higher system temperature, so you can't overclock as much, but you have fewer data collisions.
...I still can't believe nobody's thought of a better system than ribbon cables. And don't say anything about SCSI or I'll shoot you. Seriously.)

Yes, it’s my fault.

Uh, Seagate? I would recommend not purchasing that drive, heh...

The general consensus from "present-day" hard drives is that they're all "relatively good". While Seagate was once (rightfully) known as the "sea-crate" of hard drives they've improved over the years. Everyone will tend to cling to "their" brand, but I'll take whatever gives me the best price/performance ratio (this usually translates to "cheapest").

My brand WAS IBM, and with good reason, too. Never have I ever had an IBM drive fail on me. The 75GXP fiasco was extremely unfortunate for both IBM *and* me, because now I need to find a new HDD manufacturer to swear by.

I've had 1 of 2 WD drives fail me. This new one resets its head occasionally, which worries me.

I've heard horror stories about Seagate, and haven't seen much evidence to disprove them.

Are there any other hard drive manufacturers out there anymore?

Yes, it’s my fault.

*gasp* They're the ones that've been "pushing the envelope" on specs. Huge drive sizes, UDMA133, etc... Some of the technology came from when they absorbed Quantum (Quantum Drives, that is...).

Speaking of IBM...

My fourth IBM drive died last night. Been expecting it since I'd hear those lovely little noises for a couple of weeks now. Just been trying to see how long it would last.

3 60gbs
1 100gb

in less than a year and a half.

All had proper cooling (HD's were barely warm to the touch.)

POS IBM. I'm all Western Digital now.

EEEK! DON'T SAY THAT!! I've got TWO 60GXPs in RAID-0 with TWO fans blowing on them.

AFAIK, there was a bad manufacturing plant. I hope my fans, etc. aren't too loud for me to hear it dying. (Could they be?)

Yes, it’s my fault.

Muahahah!

I was reading through "Maximum" PC last night checking out their Ultimate Gaming systems for a laugh. THEY STILL do not EVER knock the systems for using RAID-0 or even give a warning. Geesh, The Falcon Northwest was using 4... yes 4 WD 120GB in RAID-0....and it didn't even have a good backup except for a CDR! WTF? RAID-0 is fine as long as you have a good backup system but paying $7K for the "ultimate" system with no backup is just insane.

Yet another reason why I hate "Laximum" PC.

I've got 2 IBM's left in my 2 USB2 External Enclosures. One of 'em (the 100gb) was giving me some odd behavior perform I took it out of my case....... Just ordered 4 WD 120GB and a Promise RAID controller for my new home file server...probly gonna order more WD's next week for my external drives.

Maybe you should order a bunch of IBM Deskstar 20GXPs. Now THERE were some reliable hard drives. I keep debating whether or not to get new drives.. I get a scare, I back my shit up, I talk for a day about getting new drives, and then I don't. *sigh*
Tell you what, though: I'm never, EVER trusting a WD. It was the ONLY hard drive I've EVER had crash on me, and while I haven't owned a TONNE of drives, I've had seven (well, okay, more than that, but I was too young to remember my 386... and the crappy full-tower 486 that my dad owned, heheh, funny story with that one: he ended up needing to cut out a huge hole in the side to keep it from crashing in the summer. That was exciting, heh)

In any case, I'm thinking that I need some new drives anyway. (not for space, but hey, they're cheap, so I might as well... plus, I've only got 1GB left on my "storage" drive, so I need another one of those.) Suggestions? DosFreak, say Western Digital and I'll be forced to maim you. It's company policy, you know.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Seagate Barracuda IVs and Vs are some of the nicest drives I've used in a while. They aren't the fastest, but they aren't slow. They're nearly silent, and I've had no problems whatsoever. I even stick them in small boxes that get moved and bashed around all the time. I would highly recommend them. There were Seagates for a while that I wouldn't have wished on anyone though. 😀

All my IBMs died on me. Luckily I knew a guy in RMA at a local shop who always swapped them out for me. Those ones fried too, so I eventually switched to the newer Seagates. What happened was, some exec at IBM decided that he'd move HDD production to another plant to save a couple of pennies per drive. The plant built other components, but never full HDDs. They were most likely not prepared to take on the task. And, in the long run they spent way more on returns than they would have spent to keep making them at the more expensive reliable plant. I feel sorry for anyone hearing the beep, click, and grind.

The new Maxtors are a little louder, probably because of their Quantum heritage, but they are fast, and reliable. I would get them if I didn't like how quiet the Seagates were.

If memory serves, WDs are made or at least the IP is owned by IBM, but I don't think the WDs are made in the stupid plant. For a long time (since about the 850MB-1Gig days,) I wouldn't use them. They would last forever, but they were slow as hell. Now they are making some pretty nice drives again.

I work in a hardware configuration test lab, so I have access to everything. My collection at home (with the exception of pure machine count,) is pretty close. We beat on hardware pretty extensively here, so I get a pretty good idea of what works well.

Well, that's my little bit on HDDs. Hope it helps anyone looking for one.

I like WD. I had one die on me once, and I called their automated phone system to find out that it walks you through a diagnosis of your problem by going so far as to ask you what noises your drive is making ("if the drive is making a clunking sound, press 1. if it makes a grinding sound, press 2" hehe). They also replaced the drive for me without much hassle (IIRC, I gave them a credit card number as insurance, and they sent me the new drive and had me send the bad one back in the box it came in, no postage required)

I've tried Quantum and Maxtor drives as well in the last half-dozen years and I can't really complain. The Quantum didnt have SMART capability like it was supposed to, which made me think maybe it was defective, but I never had any serious problems with it.

Way to bring up old threads from the dead. It was never the IBM drives making the bad noise anyway -- it was my Western Digital drive. (Hah, go figure. Pieces of shit. I give this one maybe a year to live.) I have four Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB drives in a RAID-5 array now.

Closing thread: I'M NOT DEAD YET, I'M GETTING BETTER! *smash*
