Hello!

I am currently working on installing my old king's quest games!

I was able to get 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 to work but i have been unable to get 5 to work correctly.

I installed VDMSound and when i run that with King's Quest 6, it works well. However, when i run King's Quest 5 with VDMSound it does nothing for it. It starts up with a black screen and says "Unable to Initialize Audio Hardware" and it does not play at all.

I am trying to run it with windows XP SP1 AMD3400+ AC97 Compatible Audio Chip.

I would really love to play King's Quest 5 so if anybody could give me any suggestions or help it would be much appreciated!

Thank you for your time and have a great day!

hmm, not sure what to say, doublecheck the settings in King's Quest 5 setup to make sure they make your VDMSound setup. Otherwise try DOSBox which I perfer because emulate is overall better and I don't think VDMSound is going to be developed more anytime soon.

Hello again!

Thank you for your quick reply. So i downloaded dosbox and i have attempted running it but i really am not very good with that type of program and i seem to have a lot of problems with it.

Do you think you could help walk me through how to run king's quest 5 on dosbox? It's located on my S drive and i also have it on the cd and i really don't understand the whole mounting thing or anything.

Any further help would also be greatly appreciated! I will try to post this question in a dosbox forum as well in the hopes of getting further responces. Thank you again for your time.

Okay it is really simple.

It goes like this, since you've already installed it onto your hard drive.

I'll shorten it to what you need to mount and it should work itself out because you'll be retaining the drive codes for it to locate the CD-ROM

Make sure you're command prompt says "Z:\" so that you get the follow commands mounted properly.

Just type "mount S: S:\" (without the quotes) in DOSBox's command prompt.

Then type "mount [x]: [x]:\ -t cdrom -ioctl" (without the quotes and replace both [x] with your CD-ROM Drive Letter that you installed KQ5 from)

Don't worry about any other drives since we're just thinking about playing King's Quest 5.

Now type "S:" and then go to your Sierra folder and type kq5 and it should boot/run.

Hopefully you'll KQ5 will run. (I have the CD version as well and it runs just fine for me)

I could give you alternate instructions at a later time on how to run KQ5 CD from the HARDDrive.
Almost all Sierra games can be run from the HD because of their very simplistic RESOURCE.CFG which allows for directory linking.

IM me through whatever Instant Messenger Software and I'll try to help you if you want to try that.
I use all three above. I've added you just in case (I noticed you're offline.)
Also you should hopefully not get that message if you properly setup your audio configuration in the installer.

This is a well known problem with Sierra's SoundBlaster driver from the SCI1 DOS games. It is a speed problem and there is a patch for it. You can get the GOSiERRA Patch here: http://en.ecomstation.ru/personal/kiewitzsoft … /GOSiERRAv3.zip
