Hi there.

I'm posting here because this is a problem for which I haven't find a solution. I didn't even find anyone experiencing the same problem, so let's get into it.

I'm sure some of you know this little game called Catacomb 3D. Well, a couple of weeks ago, I was renaming some of my files for the sake of consistency (like, "quake1" to just "quake") and it worked without an issue, except for Catacomb 3D. Every time I change the exe's name (catacomb.exe) to something else, when starting from DosBox (after renaming), the message "Non renombrarum, largo vivirum..." appears in white text, and the game won't start. Now, it seems pretty clear to me that it is because I'm changing the name, so no questions there. What I can't understand is why I can't find any explanation whatsoever about why this happens. For example, looking in Google (or DuckDuckGo) for "Catacomb 3d" + renombrarum or "DosBox" + renombrarum, etc., etc., etc., turns no results. 0. Zero. Nada. It's like it is not related at all to DosBox or Catacomb, yet it only happens with that game. I seriously refuse to believe this only happens to me. And it is curiously just happening with Catacomb 3D. I tried renaming every other DOS executable, without a problem in every case except Catacomb 3D.

Anyone here knows what's happening?

The obvious guess (didn't check) is that the game itself is trying to verify its own filename, and complains if it isn't CATACOMB.EXE. Especially since the 'error message' appears to be (mock?)-Latin for "don't rename, live longer". 😉

As for why it isn't mentioned anywhere, I suspect that most people don't attach vital importance to renaming executables on a whim. If you must launch the game with a shorter command, just use a batch file.

That makes sense.

Well, I think I can live with catacomb.exe instead of catacomb3d.exe 😀.

Thanks a lot for the fast answer man.

Have a good day.
