Hi everybody,

I'm sure many of you are familiar with the original Formula One Grand Prix / World Circuit racing game created by Geoff Crammond. For many years, I've been the adminstrator of the grandprix1.com website, now merged in a more general racing site. The game is still played today, I occasionally receive email from people asking questions/or forums messages discussing concepts or offering carsets. Despite it's age, it remains a very playable game and with the onset of emulators like Dosbox, it seems likely that this will continue well into the future. The game itself is considered abandonware and can be easily acquired from several reputable sites.

The purpose of my message is to discuss the outstanding issues with the game. Over the last few years, some development was made into trying to develop a track editor and several attempts were also made to fashion a new editor for the game itself. Unfortunately, the majority of this efforts failed due to time constraints on the individuals involved. For the reason, it is not surprising that we know more about the game than has been utilized into editors. Some major developments possible with the game are on the tip of being realized, but never could be brought to fruitation because of the time required to program such ideas into practical solutions.

I would like to consider removing this restriction finally by starting an open-source project. It has the advantage that several developers will be able to work on the solution, a situation that hasn't existed up to now. The main goal would be the production of a track editor, something which still has not been successfully implemented to date, although we have a good knowledge of the track files. The secondary goal would be the development of a game editor to replace F1ED, the best available editor currently.

With this thread, I hope to appeal to any previous fans of the game, and anybody else who fancies a challenge to make some F1GP/WC history 😀 I would prefer to use Java to produce the application, although I would consider other offers if anybody has an alternative suggestion.

I realise that interest may be low for this project and this may not be the ideal location to post, but is anybody interested?

Thanks
