Caught a DFI Itox 586 (socket 7 430TX chipset).

From what little info the listing had, its got a 233 Pentium MMX and 32MB SDRAM.

Anyone know the fastest CPU this can handle? I'd love to drop a K6-2 in it but, from my reading, the 430TX chipset is picky above 66MHz FSB.

For those curious. It's gonna be a 98se rig.

Plans so far are to use my AWE64 Value and the onboard S3 Trio. 64MB of ram as well (Would it benefit to run 2 32MB sticks?). Also, is there any benefits to 100MHz ram or would 66Mhz be fine?

64mb will be fine and it can be single stick or two 32 it really doesn't matter, and cpu support with this chipset is usually good. At once time I even had a K6-3 working in a TX board without issue (no bios flash or anything). Just use 100mhz ram as it really doesn't matter until you start overclocking the fsb to 83mhz ect. AWE64 value is ok but not exciting compared to the nice things people often brag about having. S3 Trio is Good for Dos games. I have gone all the way up to 256mb a few times just for kicks.

430TX does 83mhz or something like that just fine and never had any problems overclocking boards that used it even using multiple pci cards like a V3 2K pci.

Looked at this http://www.dfi-itox.com/pages/products/mother … mb/34020927.pdf and you can use just about anything 🤣.

2.2v min and decent multiplier selection but the fsb selection is crap. 😒

Just get a K6 300mhz or a K6-2 at that same speed with a 66mhz fsb and there shouldn't be any issues.

My 430TX board works fine with 83 MHz. I use a K6-III+ at 500 MHz. I did notice that 256 MB of SDRAM was unreliable at 75/83 MHz. Using 256 MB of 72-pin EDO RAM along with disabling the motherboard's L2 cache (by removing the DIP TAG chip) solved all stability issues.

I guess I'll have to do some experimenting when I get the board. The cache is soldered on but, i would think it has an option to disable it. I have a K6-2 450 (I think it is) floating around somewhere, I'm have to dig it out.

Would a K6-2 (3) need a modded BIOS?

I may also try 128MB stick of SDRAM. The board takes EDO as well but, I dont have any.

Often, the board's BIOS needs to be modified to accept K6-2/3+ chips, but not always.

A single stick of 128 MB SDRAM might be OK at 83 MHz. The issues usually come when taking the board to the limit.

In my particular case, the CMOS setting to disable L2 cache didn't work. I had to remove the TAG RAM to turn the L2 cache off.

I might just stick one of my 8MB voodoo 2's in it and see how far the Pentium will overclock.

Most of the games I'm wantin to throw on it shouldn't need much more than that.

So I got the board (will get a pic or two of it here soon). It's setup with a 10GB HD, AWE64 Value, 64MB PC100 RAM, and the Pentium 233.

I installed Windows 98 SE but, I'm running into one issue. The onboard USB ports will not initialize. I've installed Intels chipset drivers and it keeps giving me a Code 10.

Anyone got any ideas?

Also, I downloaded and installed the S3 Trio drivers from S3s website. It gives me an option for 1024x768 but only in 256 colors.. does this sound right? It only has 1MB of onboard memory as well. Is this a memory limitation?

I beleive you need 2 MB for 1024x768x16-bit.

Not sure about the USB ports. Never had this problem on my 430tx board.

Contact Jan Steunebrink and ask him to patch the BIOS for K6-3+ support and 128gb hdd limit.

IMO opinion this board is better for a pure DOS machine. You got 6 ISA slots at your disposal.

Found this page, there are BIOS updates for that motherboard

Just wanted to update on this. Got around to messing with the system again after I transfered it to another case. I installed the USB Mass Storage drivers (I think this was unrelated to the issue but USB drives make things so much easier). Afterwards (due to unrelated issues) I reset the BIOS to "Optimal Defaults" and the USB started working! I'm not sure if there was an IRQ conflict or something was turned off or what but, I'm glad its working now. Makes life easier.
