I looked on eBay, where I usually get my vintage hardware, but there aren't many sellers of the GUS, the only one I found was a €400 of the last model… no way I'm spending €400 on a 20-ish year old hardware though.

I wanted to upgrade the sound card in my Olivetti M4 434S and I was looking for a GUS because I'd like to do some comparison with the AWE32 I already have (it's not worth to do that on DOSBox, I prefer real hardware), but GUS are so hard to find !!!
I mean… there are €30-ish sound blaster cards on ebay and no GUS ?!
Does someone know some other site that sells vintage hardware and might have some GUS for sale ? (preferably that ships in Italy)

Currently assembled vintage computers I own: 11

Most important ones:
A "modded" Olivetti M4 434 S (currently broken).
An Epson El Plus 386DX running MS-DOS 6.22 (currently broken).
Celeron Coppermine 1.10GHz on an M754LMRTP motherboard

Amibay? Sometimes you can find something cheap there.
That said, I seriously doubt that you will find any cheap GUS online. Too old, too rare and too sought after.
Everyone want's them, yet they have inferiour number of uses compared to something like an SB16.

Actually funny. GUS are a card for a specific timeframe, and so it is only good for two things. Eighter having it only for testing the soundquality and for gaming them really few games that are GUS compatible. Well... Compared to the number of SB/Adlib compatible games.
Second, a GUS is for Demo's and Tracker-music. The last thing you can do with a GUS, is to buy it and just looking at it.
This sounds crazy. Yes... So as much as I personally like the looks, feel and smell of Hardware. I have no use for a GUS.
Hence why I sold off my GUS-ACE the last year. I was better off with AWE64-Gold, SB16, YMF-718s and YMF-724 cards.

The best place to search for GUS cards, if you REALLY want it, are to find one at a flea market.
You need to find those places, that sell stuff like electronics. Or computershops, that are known to have excisted since
the mid 80's.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.

I think one seller that is present on this forum had GUS PNP 1.0. for sale for little more than 100 Eur. The offer isn't mine, of course (I hope I'm not infringing any rules).

I lucked into mine on a domestic forum. Probably best to look for them closer to home than eBay. They're out there and they don't cost $200.

I got my GUS Classic 3.74 in perfect, absolutely perfect condition quite accidentaly, when I attempted to buy an empty AT tower.

When we opened it with the seller to remove the internals, I saw a red PCB with "Ultrasound" tag. So I told him I would take the whole machine. It costed me 15USD for the whole PC and I still consider this my best buy ever.

BTW - I think that this would be an interesting thread - where people would post their most lucky buys ever.

There's a thread on here about making a gus clone. Read that. Maybe wait for the second batch to be announced.

What do you mean a GUS clone ?
Getting GUS soundfonts on the Sound Blaster ?

We are talking a GUS clone... You know.... As in hardware. 😉
I do not think that they will be cheap, and they will be sought after, because of the nature of the project.
Basically one man creating a brand new soundcard. He had help, though most is done by him personally.

I would have thought every comparison worth doing would have been done by someone out there already.

I "bought" my GUS PnP on a local forum. Payed $80 and never saw the card 🙁 Then several months later one of my "I accept old hardware" ads payed off and I was invited by a dead system administrator's wife to take a look at his old goods. He was a great man, btw, very well-known among cyclists. And there I found, among other great things, GUS MAX 2.1 for absolutely free. Some things you never expect!

I can't think of an online place where the owner would not know what the thing is worth (or a ballpark value anyway).

You need to get to know the local ewaste scrappers and tell them what you need. Or just get lucky like most people who keep looking do.

I got my both my ultrasounds on ebay a decade ago for $15 max (that includes the PnP in shrinkwrap).

Back in the day everybody had a soundblaser of some kind or a cheap SB clone Reveal card. Only one friend had an Ultrasound and even he purchased a SB32. So those cards were never that common.

I actually had trouble selling my GUS classic a few years ago. Not sure what the recent hype is all about. I think I ended up selling it for about $100 which was really good sell. It had the original documentation and drivers disks too.

Don't expect the auction to end cheap and likely to balloon into the hundreds before it is over.

If I'm not mistaken, this seller has been selling GUS sound cards on eBay for the past couple of months.
He probably has a stash somewhere and he's selling them off one by one (which makes more sense since he can then get more for each card).
He always starts off with a low price, but demand just pushes up the price to between $150 & $170 each time.

I always look for the "Buy now" offers on eBay, these are worthless, especially at the beginning.

A GUS will be awesome for games starting in 1993 and further. There might be some 1992 titles that support it in fact.

If you combine it with a Sound Blaster Pro 2 or an YMF card you'll cover pretty much the entire DOS period, with excellent FM, PCM and good MIDI. Add an external Sound Canvas or MU unit and your covered for pretty much every game.

SB16 is just an overrated piece of hardware whose popularity soared in its time no doubt due to the marketing hype and to a similar extent: shady practices.

Get a GUS and enjoy it! I have a boxed GUS MAX i probably will get rid of, but i wish to trade it for something else instead of selling.

So far I found almost like 4 ISA sound cards at home + 1 PCI, but none of them is a GUS...

I found an Avance Logic crap-tacular card
The CT3670 AWE32 which is in my Celeron Coppermine build
The CT2950 which is in my 486
The Sound Blaster 2.0 (I think, it's from 1990 as stated in the 5 1/4 floppies that I found with it, but I'm not sure about the model itself, I haven't checked it enough)
And the CT4750 PCI128 which is in my Win98 build.

90% sound blaster, 0% GUS, I haven't heard anything different than the AWE32 so far... and as for external MIDI, I have yet to try with my MIDI keyboard, that's gonna sound lame, but at least I can also compose something with Voyetra.
