Shorting +5V to GND shouldn't theoretically damage any of the ICs. The power supply, maybe. The jumper itself, probably. Some power traces on the PCB, possibly. Inspect the PCB carefully for any burned out traces.

There's a trace from C31 to speaker pin 4 that's discoloured. The jumper itself certainly. Another SBC works fine on the backplane, so power supply and backplane are possibly still OK.

Other than that everything looks OK-ish.

Well then perhaps you didn't manage to kill it yet. Don't worry, I'm known for making mistakes just like this. Once I managed to plug a 4-pin molex connector into a HDD upside-down. The magic smoke escaped. 😀

BTW that is probably a design mistake on the board. You shouldn't be able to casually jumper Vcc to GND.

Yeah I wasn't overly dismayed, I know shorting to ground isn't necessarily fatal but nobody wants to see their hard work emitting smoke.

Allrighty, I'm still unable to flash the file. It complains that "the bios128k-2.0.bin file is empty!" even though it's just the plain old downloaded file.

Very annoying.

I don't believe the XT-IDE board will present more than 32kb anyway; I'm not sure if it's possible to split the bios and have it fit into one 32kb segment...

i flashed my 128k v2+xtide bios tonight in my g840. I'm missing ONE chip 🙁 aaargh.

Yep I literally have nothing capable of flashing this ROM. Went through my entire stack of motherboards and not a single one has a 32-pin socket. Only a few ISA NICs that aren't supported by flashrom.

It DOES appear that only 32kb of the rom actually contains any data, the bits from 8000h to FFFF. If I split the rom on 32kb segments, I'm able to isolate just that code and flash, but it still doesn't boot.

I expect it may be a ROM checksum issue now? Why does the rom seem to use FF for blank space rather than 00?

Its probably to do with that its FF because when ram is not present, you get an FF on the bus because the lines are pulled high by default.

I have a TL866 USB programmer; not very cheap (~$40-50 depending on variant and how many adapters it includes) but very capable. Search for "MiniPro" or "TL866" on Amazon, ebay etc.

Yes, it's been a life-saver in a few situations. The 866CS that you ordered doesn't have an ICSP header (mine does, but it cost about $10 more). I never used the ICSP port but it's nice to know it's there just in case. I think there are instructions somewhere on the web on how to mod a 866 to add the ICSP port.

Hopefully this puppy fires up OK, and I didn't irreparably damage any important bits. The V20 and Flash chip are OK at the very least, I was able to test those out...

I didn't think to check before, but I hope it supports the BIOS chips on my Tandy 1000TL/SL. I've been wanting to dump those and see about upgrading the on-board DOS...

so something wants the -12 or -5 (could be my video card.. who knows)...

anyways.. since I flashed the XTCF-LITE version of the bios, I guess I now need to build the card!

once I get it into a more permanent home than the backplane just sitting on the bench I'll see how it goes.

seems to bootup fine with turbo on as well, with a 24mhz osc, thats 8mhz!

Meanwhile, my programmer has been sitting in a DHL Global Mail shipping faciilty in Compton, CA for five days.

I honestly wouldn't have thought it POSSIBLE to ship something cross-country this slowly.

tried the 40mhz oscillator, which would be about 15mhz, xi8088 would post (play its 5 note song) but the VGA card would not come up. I need to grab some bits from Mouser for the XT CF IDE-LITE card so I'm going to grab a 36mhz osc, which should be 12mhz turbo and see how it goes. turbo at 8mhz seems fine tho.

I never, ever use DHL. For many reasons - this being one of them.
