Prices will keep people from building 15 different 486 machines down the road, is that really a bad thing? When things are free or close to it people tend to hoard.

There is nothing wrong having more than one system and things have changed a lot over the years from those being so cheap, better to stock up now than wishing that you had bought this or that in the future.

I've heard about many hoarders that died in their stuff ;--)

True but most of us don't have that kind of money and some have wives so that really limits the collections 🤣. Scary to think of how much some of this stuff is going to be worth ten or twenty years from now.

I am well aware of the issue, but I don't really think I could get it cheaper nowadays. There's some dude selling this sort of card on Amibay for 150USD, not to mention absolutely absourdous offer - 500USD for Ensoniq Elite I made to acquire lately for 10USD equivalent shipped.

Just boycotting the offers does not seem the way to go, and this 50$ is quite moderate pricing to my taste. And living in Poland I am not millionaire, as you may imagine. The weight of every $ is probably more sensible to me than to you guys in USA.

But yeah, Lehman may take the prices back down. I hope it will sink along with the prices.

Just keep sharing, relax, it's no big deal. And keep sharing what you paid for em so we can get an idea on market prices.

No there is nothing wrong with stocking up, hell I did. Putting a 486 gaming machine together even now is cheaper then putting a new gaming machine together.

The reality is these items are getting harder to find, they are just not that common as they once were. Recyclers have P4 and newer systems to scrap with a few older ones once in a while. Sites like these keep interest going, so people want to experience the older systems. I was lucky in that I kept some of my old cards purchased new in the basement until the retro bug caught me. I also was lucky in snagging systems and parts nobody wanted when they were at the bottom of the wanted/valuable curve (been collecting since 2000). While I can kick myself for not hoarding multiples of everything I just can't see where I would have stored them anyway since I have been continually collecting since 2000 (different systems).

Today I bought Turtle Beach Tropez Classic you can see below. I was looking for this model for it's good SB compatibility. Other TB ISA soundcards don't seem to be good DOS performers. It is only a matter time before half decent sounds cards will be close to $100, anything 3dfx will be over $100-150, half decent vlb cards $100 easily, most of the half decent socket 7 boards $50 to $100, and the pain goes on. That's how the market works. If no one would buy it, then it will be scraped by recycle centers. (if it was worth nothing, people would throw it away.

And if you buy old high-end hardware now, then you already been a 8 years to late.. I started buying this old hardware in 2008 and then the pile of PCB`s and VLB cards were not that big amount anymore..
More ideal was if you started in 2000, then there was a lot more nicer stuff to get for lesser money.

Yea about 2008 remember the housing crash? People buying overpriced houses on cheap credit at teaser rates only to default later once the rates went up. The market doesn't work, just one bubble after another and people never learn just look what is going on now. The real prices/value of much of this hardware is only a third to half of what sellers on eBay are expecting but most of those sellers are fools like wanting $500 for a generic 486 board ect.

Unfortunately for me I have had to rebuild my collection for the second time as I lost my previous collection to arson, really sucks to know people these days... The 2000s were truly a gravy train for retro hardware even vintage macs were dirt cheap. I miss those days when one can buy a v5 5500 agp from off eBay for less than $20 shipped and there was much more available back then at any price.

Mate are you 12 years old? There are people posting here from all over the world - completely different backgrounds / economies / disposable income at play. What "most of us" choose to spend is irrelevant and none of your concern I'd argue.

And for the record I'm married, and my wife does not limit my collection. She's nice to me and wants me to be happy, imagine that.

I have a girlfriend also, but she really dont care what iam doing.. I can tell that she isnt that happy i spend a lot of my money on old hardware..
I keep the money for the house and billings seperate from the things i do in my time.. So al the money that is left, i personally can decide what to do with it..

But iam not a brainless fool that buying all parts and think i need that later.. I just make plans on which systems iam going to be made, and then look for parts and see if there is anything interesting for it..
Most of those low-end parts iam really not intressing in.. I know for my self i never will use them on later builds..
And over my job, its maybe not the best job out there, but i cant complain. Some people do have it worser..

We are a global community, some earn more than others, some have more time on their hands than others, some are in it to make money, life isn't always fair, you got to play the cards you're dealt.

So, I'm buying some things from someone online and they sent me some pictures of their other items. I see a couple of "interesting" things, but I don't know if I should bother adding them or not.

For example, an In-Box Creative DVD-RAM drive. Seems quite rare without the box, let alone with the box... but I have no idea what I'd do with it unless it was worth it to resell. There are also some older joysticks and a Gravis gamepad, but I don't know if they are worth bothering with. The one only has two buttons total, and the other "Digitus" one looks more useful but I can't find any information about it. I already have a spiffy old Quickshot QS201 for really old games that want a joystick... wouldn't mind something for games that support more buttons and other axis, but a late-90s Saitek or something like that would probably be better than any no-name joysticks. I also have a Gravis Gamepad Pro (certainly don't have the box for it though)... and I've determined that Gravis makes horrible D-Pads, so I wouldn't bother with another one unless it were worth something in-box.

Anyone see anything worth grabbing in this lot? He seems quite reasonable with his prices, but he lives at the other end of the country so I'd be paying for shipping, and I don't really have room for clutter unless its worth using or turning around.

Maybe the SCSI card, depending on price. The DVD-RAM drive if you're into rare storage stuff. I doubt it would be of much practical use.

Yeah, rare storage devices would probably only be useful to me if they bridged a gap between systems and allowed an unusual amount of storage on an older system. For example, some kind of (cheap) higher capacity removable storage that'd work on an 8bit IBM system would be handy for backing up and archiving old drives\disks that only work on those systems. Currently the best I've got for that purpose is a 1.44MB floppy drive, which acts as a 720K in that system. Even a 20MB hard drive is tedious to back up on 720K disks. 😉

I will say though, when I looked on eBay just now for SCSI 5.2GB DVD RAM drives, I see that they seem to sell for a pretty high price. But those are different brands. No idea if a Creative is worth anything.
