Been trying to get Cool World up and running. The DOSBox page says that it works with v0.65 (and yes, I did try back tracking to that version.) I get the same problem every time. I made images of my disks, and tried installing it in DOSBox. It copies the files, extracts them, and apparently deletes the copied files (after extraction.) At this point, the installer gives me a Fatal Error FF44 message (can't find a reference to the error code.) It then exits with the message "Could not find any fixed disk's..." In SVN DOSBox if I then try to run the game, I get a brief message on the console screen with a GRP4 Call 5 error and DOSBox shuts down. If I reset DOSBox and try running, it just locks up. v0.65 will play a high pitch tone for a while, then lock up After a reset and run, it just does noting (straight back to prompt.) Tried running with the -j -m (don't detect joystick or soundblaster/adlib cards,) and it still locks up in SVN build. v0.65 will give me an Illegal CPU call GRP5 Call 7.

Any help at all would be appreciated. Thank you.

I hope that SVN is not DAUMs. Try a vanilla one.

I tried v0.65, v0.74, SVN 3909 (The last build I compiled,) and my own personal build (3909 with a lot of my own alterations.) The same, or very similar, problems occurred with all. It doesn't make sense to me. About the only thing I haven't tried is downloading an unsupported version of the game. Because, well, it is "supposedly" completely unsupported. But it is starting to look like that was the version that was actually tested and is listed as working. I've been playing musical configuration settings for days now (different cores, machines, CPU, etc....)

"Fatal Error FF44" is physical copy protection. Same kind of protection used on a few other Ocean titles: the installed game executable will not work until it is "branded" by the installer, which doesn't happen if the installer is not satisfied with the original disk.

I'll take your word for it that you have original disks, and I can give you details about bypassing the protection if you send me a PM.
