Can one use a 771 heat sink on a 604 setup?

You must first check what motherboard you are gonna use. I scrached my head how to get heatsinks for my Intel SE7520BD2 dual socket 604 board. Tried to find some cheap 3rd party (Fujitsu, Dell, HP etc) heatsinks, but it looked like the mounting holes never fitted. Sinks that matched were expensive and costed much more than i payed for the board, but i had patience and later found a pair of original used Intel heatsinks from an Israeli seller. Still a bit expensive, but couldnt let them pass since they were half the price of what i could get them from elsewere.
Because of the weight of theese heatsinks they originally were intended to mount directly to the chassis or a special mounting plate under the motherboard. You could probably find some heatsinks you could mod with drilling new holes for screws etc. I tried to use a pair from HP Proliant DL380 G4, but they were to big because of the caps around the sockets. Another pair from a DL380 G3 could fit, but i had to do some mods and didnt bother.

All 604 heatsinks are designed to mount directly to the chassis. 771 will NOT work (generally) because the height is different between 604 and 771.

That said, my server is a pair of 604's @ 3.8ghz and the heatsinks are the generic copper dynatrons. The server board I have has a "workstation" mode in bios and it will throttle the fans to a point where it is bearable. Keep in mind, 99% of this hardware was in OEM servers and workstations. So aftermarket coolers are going to be very rare.

Thanks for the info. I have a Intel server case that's meant for a 604 mobo. I just would like to get a heatsink that' can use a bigger fan so it does not need to be a screamer. A lot of sinks I'm finding use 70mm fans or 60mm fans. A sink that uses a 80mm like that old 604 swift tech sink would be nice or noctuca but they are rare.

You might have to resort to rigging something up, if you can work with metal and have the supplies on hand you could try to make a pair of backplates then try to mount a pair of more common ear friendly coolers. Just don't expect it to be easy if you do this for the first time if all else use the bolt down method but just make sure to not apply too much or too little pressure and most boards can cope with the weight if the pressure isn't too much.

Bolt down with two modern coolers is probably your best choice.

How about something like this, and then just slap some 8 or 9 cm fan on it with zipties.

That's what I was thinking, like 2 212+ or something. I done it before for bench setups, not very fond of the idea for what I'll be using the system for. But I may just do that.

Bad link. But I think I know of the cooler you were linking. and If it were not for the cost I'd do it in a hard beat. 40$ for a old cooler is a bit steep if you ask me.

Yeah, sorry about the link, fixed now. That indeed is the cooler I was suggesting. The price is a bit steep, I admit, but if the other options are some screamers with 10k rpm fan I would jump on that pretty quickly 😁

Thanks, I found a site called acoustic Pc that had a few high end noctua and thermalright colors.
They were not the cheapest but they will do grate and be quite without having to hack much or anything.
I may have to do some small mods if I don't get a motherboard with 10mm mounting holes. But that's nothing to big, different screws or tap some bigger holes. If I recall you can dill out the holes on older pre 10mm boards. But moding the mounts seem better. I'll know when I get everything!

I've so done that! Those exact heatsinks! Back in the past when I used 604 as my main system. Totally forgot about that, they work well. if you have the room and the fans, go for a push-pull setup so you can run quiet slow fans.

Dang it looks like acoustic Pc is out of stock of the NH-U9DX and there site is now down. 😢
but I found another site that sill have a NH-U9DX listed and a acoustic Pc other 604 sinks. I'll find something out. If I have to I'll get the cooler master sinks and zip tie the fans to it.
