Hey everyone...

So last week I bought another PS/2 Model 30 (8086) that came with a bad IBM WDI-325Q hard drive (head crashed; scored platter). I found a seller with a couple of WDI-325 (not 325Q) drives, and purchased one. Seller isn't sure if they're new or used, but do appear to be NOS (no paint scratches or any markings to indicate usage). Popped the drive in my Model 30 286, but got a 1701 (hard disk controller failure / not ready / general failure - In other words - VAGUE error). The computer sees there is a drive, but doesn't specify what it sees precisely. So, I installed the drive in my Model 30 8086, and get the same 1701 error code. This time I ran the advanced diagnostics, which presented a 1714 Disk Not Ready error. I don't know for sure if this drive is dead, or perhaps it needs to be prepped in a manner that is not typical of beige box machines.

Also, the drive light flashes 4 times, pauses, and continues this cycle. I don't want to give up on this thing either, but it's got me frustrated.

Your help is most appreciated!

Does it spin up at all? Does the head positioning motor move?

I forgot to mention this, but yes, the drive does spin up. Not sure if the heads are moving, but I hear something only briefly, but no actual seek test.
