I posted in the "Bought these (retro) hardware today" thread about the computer haul I picked up from a local Facebook Yard Sale group. I started tinkering around with the Compaq LTE5400, and I figured I would write up what I have done thus far.

I acquired the system with the following specs: Pentium 150MHz, 32mb RAM, 1.3GB Hard Drive, 1.44MB Floppy drive, Docking Station, Windows 98

The hard drive works fine, but is not the fastest thing in the world. It is also very very thick and heavy for its size. The first thing I did was change it out with a 4GB Sandisk Ultra CF card, and install DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11.

The floppy drive does not seem to fully work. I tried cleaning the heads, but I still get data errors on reads. I tried to replace the drive, but the connector has a larger pin pitch from the other laptop floppy drives that I have around. I ended up mounting the CF card in VMWare as a hard drive, and install everything that way. I loaded the system up with all of my Sierra games for some mobile Kings Quest action. I am still working on getting drivers for everything to play nicely, but luckily compaq still hosts DOS/Windows 3.1 drivers, but it wants to make floppy images.

Nice LTE! I have the 5300 and so far everything works, except for a dead CMOS battery and main battery. I don't know if the floppy drive is anything like the one in the LTE 4/75, but if it is, it is possible the spindle belt has deteriorated and needs to be replaced (if it doesn't spin).

If you want to replace it, Impact Computers has about 4 of these drives on hand. The prices are somewhat-reasonable, albeit expensive.

I'd grab whatever drivers you want while you still can!
Got an old Prolient few years ago and still had the drivers page, few months later...gone! and I do mean months
Lucky I think everything is still on their ftp server, but takes ages to find anything
