The SB Pro has the necessary warmth for old stuff but is missing detail later on, in my opinion.

Well, that's the technical limitations moreso than the filtering they applied, I would say.
It can only do 8-bit 44.1 kHz mono or 22.05 kHz stereo. You're just not going to get that much detail out of that.

Yeah, despite the material remaining at 8-bit 11 kHz, the 1992+ cards sound different.

@Scali Thanks for all the information! Unfortunately, I skipped the original PAS / PAS Plus. I'm familiar with the ThunderBoard, though.
Maybe the driver does support both types of Stereo FM or the MVSound TSR takes care of this.
Perhaps Sierra also had access to a prototype board..

I only have a PAS16, and in that game, you get nice Stereo FM 😀

Same here. 😀

I made a little recording for everyone to give an impression.
Be warned, I played a bit with the mixer and stuff.. The PAS16 is simply too powerful by default.
So keep in mind that this recording is in no way meant as a reference. The whole purpose of it is to demonstrate the stereo effect..
Please keep also in mind that I do neither have a PAS or PAS Plus for comparison, nor a good recording equipment (low stereo separation).

Have you played around with the ALS100+ like Jo22 mentioned? Has anyone else have good info on that card?

I have one of those.
It is one of the few ISA cards that supports all the Sound Blaster models (including the Sound Blaster 16).
It doesn't, unfortunately, have an OPL3 and its DOS based mixer utility is very basic.

The ALS100 (non-plus) may have an external FM chip.
I think that's also the main difference between ALS100/ALS100+.
But I'm not 100% sure. I found hints for this on os2museum.com

I've tried an ALS120 once and the hiss was incredible - dunno if the 100 has the same issue but I wouldn't be surprised if it did:

Sound Blaster 16 Clones

Thanks, I think I've seen it before! 😀
I don't have got an ALS120, though, so I can't judge.

Here's my ALS100plus. Its external amplifier is currently bypassed (because it's noisy).
I've also taken some screen shots from the software utility and recorded a few audio samples.
Because I used line-out, the volume was very low and I had to turn it up in Audacity.
So its just normal if you do hear a bit of static noise..
