Personally I've had stability problems with Nforce-based motherboards. I don't consider them an option for a headache-free system.

I/O, I/O,
It's off to disk I go,
With a bit and a byte
And a read and a write,
I/O, I/O

I tended to avoid due to weird memory addressing problems with Grub at the time. LILO worked okay, though.

for 9x avoid Nforce, great for NT Kernal, a pain in the butt for 9x. But the VIA K8T800 and K8T890 are excelent, and I've seen K8T890 with PHenom II support, so there are very fast 9x options out there.

One of these days I'll put a Sempron 145 in my K8T890 board to see how fast it is in Win98.
