I'm doing things to my home network, and I wan't to build my own router. For a LONG time I used my XG-DLS (fully pimped). It worked great with no problems for years. I've used smoothwall and had zero issues. ( http://www.smoothwall.org/ ) I bought a dual tualatin, and got it fully decked out, and I go to install smoothwall, and it would just crash. Furthest I ever got was 12% copying files. I google the error code I saw during boot, and disabled APIC. Still had errors, Something about /etc/rtc missing. (i'm not in front of the computer atm) I dick around with it for about 3 hours, get nowhere. Try VYos, exact same issues. I install XP, runs smooth as silk, no problems. Passed 24 hours memetest and 12 hours of multi-PI. Board is fine. By this time i'm pretty irked. I set up my xg-dls again, everything installs perfectly, works as expected. 😵

I mean I CAN use my XG-DLS, but the power supply is on its last leg, and to be honest, I don't want to lose this board. Also, they are slated to install gigabit fiber in the near future, and 2x 900mhz xeons aren't going to cut it. I'm not doing anything crazy; basic routing, QoS, VPN, segmented wifi, and the usual suspects.

specs:
XG-DLS - 2x 900/2m/100 p3 xeons ( SL4XY ) - 2gb ecc ram
Thunder HEsl-T (S2688) - 2x 1400mhz p3 tualatins - 6x 1gb ecc/reg
- common -
3x gigabit nics based off the RTL8169S
ati rage iic video
1x 320gb sata drive on converter (also tried standard ide drives too)

Do you get a kernel panic or does the install stall silently?

Are you sure your install media is good?

Can you check if Smoothwall's kernel supports the dual tualatin? I recently had an issue with clonezilla on an old system that required me to go back to a 2011 version to gain back the hardware support that newer versions stripped out of the kernel.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

I actually got it working last night. It was suggested on another forum to use the onboard scsi. It worked. Dont know why i cant use the onboard ide, or add-on sata, or add-on ide, but ill take what i can get.

I will probably make a new thread with pictures, it is a beautiful board.
