I managed to get a nice AT case from eBay for my 486 project. The case is great but did not come with any standoffs for the motherboard. I have lots of them spare that I have collected over the years but there seem to be longer ones and short ones. I want to make sure the cards slot in and secure properly and the height of the motherboard could change this. Does anybody know how high these standoffs should be for older AT cases or did it just depend on the make of he case back then anyway? I might just have to experiment.

I think in those days the plastic standoffs were the standard, the ones that slotted into the v-groove slots on the motherboard tray. But I use the brass ones in my 486 (I'm using an ATX case) and when I first installed, I experimented with the height like you say.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.
