It seems I'm not the only one with major problems with the keymapper in DOSBox. I looks like it's been a long standing problem that the devs have no interest in resolving anytime soon. None the less, since the Festivus pole is up I might as well air my grievances with the keymapper.

It looks like everything is mapped properly, backslash to backslash, right shift to right shift, etc. But for some odd reason, DOSBox is not interpreting the mappings correctly. Other problems and "solutions" tried:

  • set sdl_videodriver = windib ---- nope, doesn't work. Besides, it's hard to type "=" with a FUBARED KEYMAPPER!
  • setting sdl_videodriver to "WinDIB" in program options or as a profile's environment var --- Doing nothing produced better results.
  • Deleting/regenerating mapper files --- I had better luck getting Jean-Luc Picard to switch to coffee.
  • Uninstalling/reinstalling DOSBox --- Call it a workout because it was just an exercise if futility.

I only noticed this problem within the past week, so there's no telling how long the problem has persisted.

Yeah dude... though this is apparently a real problem, your approach needs to be softened a little.

You're just inviting the wrath of Qbix here 🤣

This is more of a problem with Windows and SDL than it is with DOSBox, if I'm not mistaken; DOSBox isn't even the only program affected.

You're not supposed to type that in DOSBox. You might get somewhere if you run that from a Windows command prompt before running DOSBox from the same command prompt. If necessary, you can set it up with a .bat file.

Right-Shift / Backslash Keyboard Problems (SOLVED!) suggests changing the Windows keyboard driver.

In such cases, can we return the product and get our money back?

You know what? I'm not letting this slide. Topic locked. See Jorpho's answer for help.

If the problem persists, please open a new topic and be way more friendly and not that aggressive. This way we will not spend most of the thread arguing over proper ways to post.
Thanks!
