Sounds like a PSU or driver issue.

I use an X800 Pro with an nForce 2 motherboard and Athlon XP 3200 no trouble at all, I would agree with the previous poster PSU or drivers. I remember especially back in the old days ATI and Nvidia drivers did not agree, I would usually reinstall if I decided to swap sides !

Sounds like it could also be a possible reflow issue, but definitely try it in another system with the right drivers and a known-good PSU first, then if you can't do anything else, set about reflowing, maybe your local maker-space will be kind enough to help you for a fiver.

Does it use an AGP bridge chip? I ask because X800XL was troublesome because of that.

I didn't see a bridge chip when i tuck the cooler off. Also the psu didn't go well.

Iirc sometimes the bridge chip was on the backside of the PCB?

And if you want, if you want you could upload a few pics of your card so we can have a look at it 😀

Also the psu didn't go well.

It died? It exploded? It electrocuted your cat?

Whats missing in your collections?

an AGP X800 had both Native AGP and PCIexpress verions of the major R42xx chipsets because ATI didn't trust bridge chips, if its an R420 its for sure AGP native

Try doing a clean windows install if you swapped out the PSU, although 90% of the time the kind of instability you described is PSU related.

Yeah I'm going to do a clean install maybe there's still nvidia drivers from the fx 5900. Also the spare psu blew a cap, good thing have a Antec 500a psu as a backup.

PSU blowing a cap = never use PSUs from that brand until 10 years after the release of that PSU if no further issues have been reported.

I am currently sitting on a slightly off name PSU with decent performance, but pretty poor reliability ratings. It's lasted for years, so I am going to leave it for now.

Not necessarily a good rule. Good designs sometimes used bad caps (I'm looking at you Antec!).

I have the card working but in a weird way, it only works when you have another monitor attached to it.

Edit Never mind it black out again.

I'had got similar tproblem with a 7600gs agp on 754 mainboard with Via chipset . In my case there was an agp bridge incompatibility . I think that ground signal is not link at one connector for that you need a second cable .But you radeon is a Palit ?

I love retro stuff but sometime is very boring test it? 😈

No I didn't put it in like that, that when I tuck the cooler off to clean the card.
