Planning a Slot 1 P3 rig. The mobo is probably whatever decent unit I can find, same with the memory, but the interesting parts are what I already have.

I have an AGP RIVA TNT2 (16MB) and a GeForce 2MX, also on AGP.

I am thinking of using the RIVA TNT2 as it would be more period accurate, and it also has capture card functionality.
I am trying to hit the upper Half-Life ballpark for performance.

I also have a Soundblaster Live! (budget version).
It's a GREAT PCI sound card. It supports up to around 500 MB DMA soundfonts for MIDI (Which is smaller than my good soundfont. 😢 ) and it looks really cool too.

Both of these parts were in my honestly underpowered Socket A system. The board and CPU are WAY too powerful for something as dinky as a GeForce 2MX (Which is sadly my most powerful AGP card)
but it has made use previously as my MIDI composition system.

So I am thinking of putting these parts, which are obviously too weaksauce for a Socket A system, into a new P3 Slot 1 system. The parts for these Slot 1 systems are almost being given away on EBay (WAY cheaper than my 486 DX4-100 build I just did)

It's either this or I invest my money into an SGI system, which would be cool for the first day or two, but I imagine it will become an investment rather than a system I would like to use.

oo, forgot HDD, although it's not that impressive, few hundred GB EIDE, I am somewhat swimming in PATA drives, while I take a SATA card I found off freecycle (If the man is nice enough to give it to me) and throw that into the Socket A system.

Why not? I love assembling systems and then uh... never using them. I always tend to circle back to the old standards, but projects are always nice.
Plus you can list it for sale and maybe get some cash.

I have though about making a paid hobby of flipping systems.
However I want a P3 system, which is why I am planning it.

🤣

Any other PCI sound cards besides the SB Live? Something A3D capable would be lovely.

All hail the Great Capacitor Brand Finder

I don't own any.

I have an SB AWE32, but that's in another computer and not good enough.

I just bumped my Pentium-2 system up to a Pentium-3 and I'm using a Riva TNT2 32MB AGP card. It's pretty solid for this system and scaled up well from the P2. But the real prize of this system was the dual Voodoo2 12MB cards for Glide gaming. With the Pentium-3, Quake 1 and 2 now hit over 100FPS with the Voodoo2 cards, with the TNT2 system generating anywhere from 35-84 FPS depending on the resolution it's running at. For games up to 2000, it's pretty solid and I've been enjoying it.

I should probably find Tomb Raider 1-4 to put on that system... Hmmmm....

I would like a couple of Voodoo cards, but they are damned expensive since EVERYBODY wants a voodoo card.

The AGP TNT2 16MB is probably a M64 and not the full 128bit high-end TNT2.
I think your rig seems like a good one, GF2MX will go pretty well with Slot 1 P3 (especially if it's not something that's as fast as a Tualatin 1400 or so) and it should eat very little power.

Should be a relatively easy build to pull off, enjoy your ride!

Thanks, maybe I will use a GeForce 2.
