When trying to delete DOS games I have finished playing I get an error message with the exe files "Cannot delete (file name). There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination may be in use".

I checked the Properties of the exe file that won't delete and under Program (Advanced) section and the Autoexec filename is %SystemRoot%\System32\Autoexec.NT and the Config filename %SystemRoot%\System32\config.NT. Obviously there is a "sharing" problem. Question is, how can I fix the problem and get rid of the "left over" exe files from old DOS games I've finished playing?

Your assistance would be appreciated, it is beginning to drive me nutz. 😠

Hmmm, try killing the explorer task, then go into task manager, go into cmd prompt and delete the file, and/or boot into safe mode and see if you can delete it.

If you can delete it by doing those 2 steps, then there is an explorer addon or other applicationn that is locking the executable.

Thanks Dosfreak. 😉 That worked. I cut my teeth on DOS way back, so all made sense to me. 😁

Markus, I had already read that link before posting. I have Win 2000 Pro, it didn't quite answer my problem. 😀

Dosfreak, I got a clear, concise reply to my question from you, and I had already done hours of fiddling and "research" .. how blind we become. Then"bingo" , it all came back. Thanks. 🙄
