I picked up this CL 5428 VLB card.

I'd like to figure out what the two jumpers do. I got a tip that one of them might be IRQ related, and the other possibly bus MHz related.

On several 5428 boards the jumper J11 seems to correspond to "IRQ9 enable" (closed) and "IRQ9 disable" (open). I assume this would mean with the jumper closed the card would use IRQ 9, and with it open it would use... some other IRQ?

And what about JP12?

Anyone have any more information or educated guesses?

Could also be wait state (0/1) and VGA IRQ.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Yes that's what they are - I have some other CL cards that have these 2 jumpers.

Ok, great. Would there be any benefit to fiddling with them?

Wait state set to 0 might be faster, but potentially less stable. Run benchmarks to see which jumper setting causes faster and slower results in 3DBENCH. Then when you figure out which is 0, use the system awhile and see if there's any stability issues.

VGA IRQ probably not necessary (mainly for Windows?). But I don't think it will hurt to change it if you're trying to figure out which jumper does what.

Thanks for the ideas!

Here are the results so far, when running VIDSPEED:

J11 closed, J12 open: Everything works normally. This was how the board was set when I got it.
J11 closed, J12 closed: No image on monitor. It sounds like computer is starting normally -- I hear the memory counting up, and the single beep.
J11 open, J12 closed: No image, no memory counting, no beeps whatsoever. Should probably bring out my ISA slot motherboard tester thingy to see what it gets stuck on.
J11 open, J12 open: Everything works normally. Performance same as with J11 closed. IRQ change?

So maybe J11 controls IRQ enable/disable and J12 wait state.

What CPU speed are you running? I don't have a lot of experience with the wait states on VLB VGA, but if I remember right, 0 w/s may not work at higher bus speeds. So if you're doing DX4-100, it may work, but not at DX4-120.

You can underclock the DX2/66 to DX2/50 or DX2/40 just to test if the system gets VGA signal with J12 closed.
