hey all;
so i was trying recently to get my midi interface to work under windows ME
but i wasnt able to for whatever reason

so i did alot of reading and figured out basically the device never had official windows 98 drivers
let alone support for win98/SE or winME.. i read something about ACPI implementation being the
cause + reason for the device being incompatible with all versions of windows beginning with 98
actually i read its possible to disable acpi in the registry or something to be able to get it to work
on the first revision of win98. but apparently the fix doesnt work with 98se or ME or 2k, only win95
+ the original win98(with a reg hack)

so i guess its back to the drawing board - time to reformat and install windows 95 osr2.5
im just wondering what video card + other components to use for easy compatibility...
i have a geforce 2mx card that i flashed to PC that was originally in a powermac g4
that worked amazingly in win9x the last time i used it, i think it was under win98se
but i was just reading some other info that suggested that it might be just as compatible
with win95... does anyone here have experience with this?

so i guess i will try again, this time installing win95osr2.5 i guess - or the original win98
ideally id like my usb2.0 support to work.. which i have working in winME right now.. sigh
but i read it doesnt work very well at all in the original win98 or win95osr2.5 i havent installed
osr2.5 in like 25 years so i cant remember:D 🤣

heres the device in question:

it connects via serial comm port

i read recently an article about optimising windows xp for music it talked about installing with ACPI selected as disabled during the actual os installation procedure.. im wondering.. would doing this with winME or 98SE make it compatible aswell?
i did find a message board forum post from "verycomputer.com" that indicated that someone had theirs working on 98se
and that they theorized that it was because their computer used APM rather than ACPI. which was a pretty astute observation for someone
of that day + age!!!!
http://www.verycomputer.com/47_b72fa9a5d11d4233_1.htm
heres the link

"I'm wondering if ACPI power management has anything to do with it. All my
machines are set up for APM, not ACPI. Maybe ACPI is messing with the
serial port, like powering it down when it shouldn't. "

"Hi all, The Midi Interface Opcode Studio64x doesn't work on Windows98 second
edition. People at Opcode suggest to not upgrade the system (and I would suggest them
the electric chair!). Somebody have an upgraded driver? Thank you all everyway.
Ciao, Datura "

anyways long story short im looking to install windows 95 now
and id like to get some advice on easiest compatible parts..
i have a pII 266mhz on a 440bx board, i have an asus p4b533 with a p4 2.4ghz northwood, i have a aopen ax3s-u with a 1.4ghz tualatin pIII, i also have a 486 DX2/80 Asus board..

i have also bunch of different graphic cards, g450, g400 dual, geforce2mx, radeon 7000 pci, radeon 7500 agp, riva tnt2 m64, RAGE 3d pro agp
i also have a radeon 9200LE pci, geforce 6200 agp,
which mobo /graphic card combo is best to use for win95 build????
is it better to use a pci graphic card instead of AGP? if im looking to experiment with different versions of win95?

i was checking out this chart just now: https://gona.mactar.hu/DOS_TESTS/
not sure if these results reflect anything on win95 compatibility

It depends what you want to do. If all else fails, just about anything can use the default Windows VGA driver. Are you going to be playing games?

Did the registry hack there not work?

Serial port communication is typically not very complicated and I would not expect it to have unusually strenuous requirements. But if you want to disable ACPI, then you just need to set the appropriate BIOS options and start Windows 98 setup with the right switch. Details are in Generic Win98SE Installation & Setup Guide .

"Best" is subjective. There is no point in using a fancy heavy-duty card if you are never going to be using any of its features.

well no there is no "Requirement" its all for tweakin-retro-fun
i will be using windows 3.11 or win95 most likely with
software/hardware combinations for music production!

my comments + Concerns stem from the fact that i used a certain windows 3.11
program and the view finder arrows worked insanely fast to the point of rendering the
app useless because u cant adjust the view to zoom in + out of editing notes
because the damn cpu goes too fast
so thast why i got the pII-266mhz to try to get it down to a more normal
response when using zoom in/out
