I am installing video drivers for this 486 DX4 PC and it seems to have done something to my Windows install.

When I tried installing video drivers for the Trident TGUI9440 VLB video card (from the disk the card came with) it gave an error and crashed while installing the video software. I went through Windows setup, and used the disk and picked a screen resolution (800x600, 256 colors) but when Windows loads it just goes to a black screen. Resetting the computer fixes it.

I am trying different resolutions but none work so far. Help 😕

Tried drivers that came with the card (was new in box) and some online I found which were similar but for evidently the PCI variant of the card (mine is VLB)

The ones with the card are for apparently the AGi variant though but the one in there is just labeled TGUI9440, no other extension.

Most I can get from Windows right now is a single pixel as the cursor. It is definitely the drivers as regular 16 color VGA works just fine.

🤣

I'll most likely be replacing the card though since I cannot seem to get it to work. Suggestions for a good pretty fast VLB video card?

Anything by S3/Diamond, Cirrus Logic, ATI, Tseng labs

I use an Diamond Stealth SE (S3 Trio32) with 2MB of VRAM. It supports resolutions 320x200 CGA all the way up to 800x600 32k colours, with anything higher requiring a CRT (Weird refresh rates)

Phil's channel has a bit mashup of VLB cards too. Check out his stuff.
