Thanks Gambit, very interesting read!

I think there's someone in the Kingdom that must be mightily pissed off by Toby Gard's megalomania every time the guy tries to take all the credit for TR1, and I'm under the feeling his name is Gavin Rummery.

Hmmm, I don't share your view. At no point in those pages does he claim ownership of the whole of TR1, just the creation of Lara herself. It's actually PSM magazine that states he was the designer of Tomb Raider which as we know is not the case.

Even Gavin has stated that Lara was the creation of Toby and Toby alone:

Indeed, but the fact remains that he's systematically acclaimed (without him refuting it) as "the original creator of Lara Croft" (which in everybody's mind means "Tomb Raider" of course, as if people couldn't make a difference between a character concept and the finished game itself), while the real yet obscure creative minds behind almost everything from gameplay to level design in TR1 were really Gavin, Heather Gibson and Neal Boyd.

Well, I'm afraid years of debunking have made me a bit partial against the poor guy... But I have to admit that I had some good fun with Galleon (though the gameplay was really average and the game quite boring after a while).

hey did you guys read a few of the posts after the scanned bit ?

pretty hillarious :

Solarix:
" pshh if the game is the same price as the others her boobs better be just as big or no sale for me 🤣"

...
spiegel:
" oh my god

they reduced the boobs and gave her a fat ass.."

...
dark kyuubi:
"..."QUOTE(G4M3R):Oh no, her boobs have got smaller"
LMAO!!...exactly what I was thinking....but seriously...OH GOD NO!...NOT ANOTHER TOMB RAIDER GAME!!!"
....

an interesting observation:
GHL:
"I see the textures are still severely limtied because of the Playstation 2 development then porting to to other consoles, i really hope they do the textures in high resolution and size them down for the PS2, which is rarely the case. so we can have full res on the PC and xbox which can handle them.

(Playstation 2 has a maximum of 256x256, but 97% of all textures are 128x128 or less, usually half that. whereas the xbox has loads of 512's running around. PS2 developers i know get alot of headaches with the playstation's barrier in technology) "

----------

From the original TR series the sparkle of ingenuity seems to have died somwhere during the second games production. Not having any inside info I cannot say for sure , but it just seems as though the "thinking" behind the direction of the games became completely disassociated from any understadning of what made TR fun an interesting and unfortuneately that 'corporate stab and slab production process' could be felt in the resulting games .

A lot of people who do not like TR say " ..you're not doing anything but runing around ..." and consequently things like "...boring..." follow .

And Undoubtedly a load of nearly pointless running around in what amounts to a huge game fluff timewaster fashion IS boring . For me it's that lame red rover focus coupled with the nasty ( and distancing ) controll scheme that completely shot angel of darkness in the foot .

( for the record the first game is cool the second one palletteable , but the rest descend into life-less zombie liek immitations of a good game in exponetial fashion )

I mean it's important to remember that when one reads a book it's not the 'sitting around nearly motionless for several hours at a time' but the instigation of kick starting ones mental machinery that makes the process enjoy able.

and , because I am ranting up this thead 😀 , i think her new ass does seem a little large for an active athletic person ( although it seems to be normally sized in comparison to teh shoulders ) , and that face looks supicioulsy like elizibeth hurely .

Oh, and not only did they decide on smaller breasts , but also a hell of a lot less firm ones too . Check out that comparison pic , her neew rack droopps half way down her chest like an old woman .

Watching Lara jump like a mad clay puppet over WipeOut-like platforms, my first impression was "hey, this is Galleon meets the Matrix!" -- then I saw her chewing baddies to pieces with a monster chaingun and somehow I remembered Toby talking about how the guys at Core had forgotten about old caves, myths and adventures... Now I'm not sure what he really meant by "going back to the roots".

Yeah, I'm concerned about those daft platforms and forced perspective camera too. The 'roots' thing is interesting -- you're focussing on one small part of the trailer where quite a lot more of it than that *does* seem more like the earlier games than the later ones. The chaingun is a crappy exception though, I agree.

Hehe, you're right Matt 😉

Ah, it's just that sometimes I feel like throwing in some easy sarcasm... I've just watched the trailer again and, indeed, I've noticed a couple of shots that seem to look familiar. I think the silly and epileptic edit really doesn't help in believing in the final product, but I've been known to be fairly tolerant in the end -- geez, I even enjoyed some moments in AoD 🙄

The gameplay, although not perfect, apparently seems better than AOD -- good point! From what I can see, the influence of PoP is immense here. Not necessarily a bad thing.

I don't like the silly positioning of some dynamic cameras, and the projected shadows are quite buggy (which I expect is normal for a preview) but... there's something I like in this game. I don't know what exactly, maybe it's the natural texturing and lighting, maybe it's the tombraiding feeling... I think I'll give this one a chance!

Lighting looks good, but the textures are bad. Lets hope for a better pc version because ps2 will lack on graphics.
Lara seems to be too fast o jumping, se actualy looks more like spiderman.

Yeah, the environment textures in all the screenshots are very low res and certainly not 'state of the art'. I've been discussing that on other forums. I think it's safe that these shots are from PS2 -- I hope they upgrade the textures for the PC and XBox 360 versions.

If anyone is still interested, I finally got around to writing a review of Legend having finished it this week.

It's long! I've been a TR fan for yonks and wanted to do the new game justice and I tend to be very wordy, so apologies if it's over long or too verbose.

Now *this* is more like the game TRL should have been. The clip is a "maybe" leaked trailer from a "cancelled" PSP game, "Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition". Looks very much like the legend engine and although a lot of people are speculating it's "fake", I can't imagine anyone going to these lengths "for a laugh"!:

Tomb Raider the original game was exciting and fun, regardless of Lara's boobs. It was like, the new Prince of Persia (which Prince of Persia 3D and so on weren't). The second was also cool. I haven't played the others, but I get the feeling that it became mostly a mascot showoff now...
Oh and, the hollywood movies were really, really awful. In my opinion.
