Hello all,

This has been on going for about a decade, and I decided to take the guts of this to my Uni's theatre, where they have all sorts of tools and space to do this.

It's a continuation/supplement of this thread: Hi I'm new - Here's my system and CPU collection!

The frame was purchased from Goodwill. The backing was made in Photoshop, printed, and laminated. The labels printed form a label maker (unlike the Intel collection I made earlier, which was printed directly onto the page, with a few mistakes),and onto the backing, which was glued to a 3/16ths inch riser (hard cardboard) to give it some height. This in turn was glued to the picture backing which slips into the slots of the frame itself, held in by tabs.

The electronics:

The LEDs were bought in Korea (1,000WON each) and are 12v, auto-polarity units that provide a LOT of light (I've used them in my cars for interior lighting when the doors open, etc) - I had my wife bring me a spool of them because they're super useful.

Here, I've recessed them into the frame by using a dremel to cut out behind them so as to make them flush:

Here's the 12v cell and housing - I will have to further recess this assembly, as it is slightly noticeable in the final product:

The toggle switch turns this all on - It's encased in the frame with hot glue.

The finish on this frame was inadequate, and due to being handled a whole lot over a decade, there were some scratches.

Sanding:

Applying automotive spot putty to get rid of all the scratches/gouges:

Sanded down again, masked and ready to paint:

Here's my old Intel one - Next time I open it (I recessed the LEDs too, but I will be adding a diffuser there so you can't see the LED lights through the side) I will attach the proper labels to the CPUs, as I do know there are errors!

Alas, I'm down to emulation.

What do you use to hold up the CPU's on the frame?

This is awesome. I wonder if my wife would let me hang up a few of these on the wall.

Is it a pain to get the CPUs out for testing purposes?

My Intel one is hanging prominently in the living room 😉 The AMD one will soon follow, and I am building a third (Intel, 1996 - 2012, as I have most of the CPUs from that era) however she has already complained about the number of vintage machines in our spare room (I have 8 ) so after my 286 build, I am not going to be building any more, and that's fair, as I will have 10 at that point.

The ones in the Intel case come out readily, as they are attached to a foam backing - The ones in the AMD case are hot glued, but if you rotate them quickly, they snap off clean, leaving the glue mess on the board and not the CPU. I tried to use as many broken CPUs as I could, but the majority of them are functional or can be made so (a few broken pins here and there).
